    Not just music theory
Don’t be scared off by the “music theory” in this podcasts title. Desi covers a wide range of topics that are relevant to all levels of ability. As a beginning guitarist starting later in life I have been filled with self doubt: Am I practicing enough? Too much? What should I be working on? Am I too old to learn? Am I making good progress? Desi has been very helpful in dispelling these self doubts and getting me on a path to achieve my goals. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone who is serious about learning to play the guitar. Check it out!

    So Helpful!
I have been listening for just a couple of weeks, and it has helped me and encouraged me! Thank you! I have starting listening from the beginning. I will try to leave specific reviews about what is helpful. I love theory and the examples and hearing the excellent playing!

    Best guitar teaching podcast!
I have lsitened to all of Desi's podcasts and they are always informative and presented very well. Desi actually gives real information in his podcsts that a guitarists can learn and use. His two books 'Fretboad Theory Vols-1 & 2' are a must for any guitarist willing to learn more about the fretboard.

    Really Useful, Practical Content
I’ve had a private lesson with Desi. I’ve also taken his Improv 101 class (I’ll take it again). Desi gives a working Musicians perspective on all the things we, “guitar engineers”, need to acquire on path to confidence as solid performers. Thanks, Desi!

This is the podcast that I’ve been looking for
Listening to people who know music inside and out because they’ve lived it is my idea of a real good time. This level of understanding is exactly what I’m interested in hearing more about.

    Total Game Changer
I’ve played bass and guitar for years and had the major/minor scales and arpeggios memorized up and down the fretboard. But this podcast is what made the pieces suddenly fit. The scales and chords made sense. Things clicked. And options became available that I didn’t know I had. This approach is so helpful. I can’t recommend this podcast enough. Even if you’ve already memorized a bunch of scales and such. Understanding how and why they work is an absolute game changer. Whatever direction you want to go with music on a fretboard, you need this content in your head.

Thank you, from a 69 year old, beginner
I am retired now. I’ve struggled with the why of chords and songs for decades. Looking forward to learning Theory.

    Approach
My playing has progressed more in the months following subscribing to this podcast than it has in years of practicing guitar and bass guitar using other methods. Desi’s way of explaining topics, Specifically by giving you small easy to understand bits thoroughly, without assuming you already know small concepts, has cleared up practically everything for me. Thank you Desi! Thank you guitar theory & fretboard theory.

Guitar Music theory course and podcast
I purchased Desi’s audio/video class on music theory and just in case you don’t want to read the review … it’s worth the money. I’m a bluegrass musician and I was afraid that the class would not be applicable to me because bluegrass rarely ventures above the 12th fret (as Norman Blake said: “there’s not much money above the 5th fret”) and this music is primarily a bunch of cowboy chords using as many open stings as possible . However, I’ve learned a ton of techniques (like harmonized scales) that I’ve heard people like Tony Rice and Dan Crary and Clarence White use. Once I analyzed their passages I have been able to understand what they are doing and why their licks work and how to put those passages into my own music. I’ve emailed Desi a few questions I’ve had as I’ve studied the material and he always replies in timely manner. Highly recommended! It doesn’t hurt to mention that I love John Fogerty and Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton and all those guitar heroes fro the 60’s and 70’s and I’ve learned to play some of their music. Throwing a Green River lick into an earl scruggs banjo tune raises some bluegrass eyebrows but what the heck! Again, this class absolutely worth the money

    The best guitar class podcast
Desi ‘s love of music & the guitar is clearly evident in his careful & considerate answers to the listeners questions. He shares his thorough knowledge on a level that any novice may clearly understand. Realistic expectations and alternate methods for varying players abilities are frequently shared. Desi is the best.

    A fantastic teacher
I came across Desi on Youtube and his messaging and teaching style immediate resonated with me. I was struggling with my approach and didn’t feel I was making the progress I wanted. Desi pointed me in the right direction and giving me the constructive feedback I needed - “learn songs!”. It was what I needed. I love the podcast content and look forward to listening each week. I always enjoy the content and it is always focused on the enhancement of learning. Should absolutely be on your list of podcasts!

    Love this show
I discovered Desi on YouTube and loved the way he broke down songs and explained the theory behind it. I’m fairly new to guitar and would consider myself intermediate. I’m at the stage where I don’t want to just learn a song by parroting. So many on YouTube dumb it down too much. But this Podcast is so much more than just theory. I love when he has guests and they answer questions and discuss everything guitar. It’s like hanging out with buddies who are better than you and learning from them.

    Great teacher!
Desi is one of the best music instructors I have encountered. He is knowledgeable and has a great ability to convey his knowledge to students. I have a good amount of his teaching material and it has helped me tremendously. I highly recommend everything he creates.

    Game changer
I Have gone from a strum along and noodle a solo with my band (for the last 20 years!), to opening my mind and playing with some solid listening, reading (I bought his book, it’s fantastic) and lots of practice. I have grown so much. Thanks desi.

    Refreshing and Informative
I have been listening to this podcast for several months now and have finally submitted a review. This is an excellent resource for anyone learning to play the guitar and wanting a deeper understanding of the instrument and music theory. I am a beginning to intermediate guitarist. It is good to hear discussion about the guitar, technique, and music theory terms no matter the episode. And it is also good to hear that learning songs is the best and most enjoyable way to explore the instrument. I highly recommend this podcast!

    So happy I found this!
I’ve been playing guitar (amongst other instruments) for over 30 years and consider myself intermediate. Problem is I’m self taught and learned everything by ear. I’ve tried to read books, watch videos etc but nothing was clicking. After listening to only the first few episodes of this podcast things are falling into place quickly! I’m actually excited for the first time in a while about my playing. Can’t wait to get caught up to the most recent episode!! I can’t thank you enough! Great voice, great information in an easy to understand way. THANK YOU!!

Taking my playing and understanding of theory to the next level!
Desi is a gifted teacher, and has mastered the art of teaching via podcast. I have been listening to this podcast nonstop for the past few weeks, and I have had leaps in my playing ability that I never thought would come from listening to a music theory podcast lecture.
  • meon2
    I learn from every session
I learn something from every one of Desi’s podcasts, and have listened to some of them several time. Probably will listen to most multiple times. I’m the type that needs to understand why I’m playing what I’m playing. For me, it’s an investment in being a better player in the long run, not just memorizing songs. Between this podcast, his YouTube videos, and the Pro Pack I purchased, by skill level has progressed significantly; building a strong foundation on which I can continue to learn this instrument and how to make quality music from it ( …play songs!).
  • Grthgjhbjghryrg
    Exceptional quality
Thank you Sir, your podcasts have taught me a lot. I’m an intermediate guitar player with lots of gaps in my theoretical knowledge. I appreciate you plugging the gaps. Very clear audio. Well written. Cheers Bill.

    Great guitar theory!
Thanks for this pod cast! Amazing teacher!

    Makes it click
Desi is a great teacher who relates all the chord shapes and scale patterns we see in typical lessons and books to actual songs, which is the best way to truly understand and remember how they are used. If you read his two Guitar theory books while stopping to learn several of the example songs in each lesson via Sonsger or Youtube, your repertoire and musical knowledge will grow. Some podcast episodes have such good info that I have to listen to them again with my guitar in hand to work thorugh the examples.
  • eatjunglefood
    Exceptional
I love his practical approach to music theory for guitar players. I’ve been listening to his podcasts and watching his YouTube videos for years and I’ve learned so much about pentatonic, major and menor scales, modes and how to apply theory and practice to performing songs. Highly, highly recommend his programs.

    Fantastic
Exactly what I needed to supplement my learning. I love listening to it when I can’t be playing. Even the first few episodes have fantastic information.

A great podcast for any guitar player.
I’m just a beginner/intermediate guitar player and I find this podcast to be very informative. There are times that it is well above my level but I still learn from it. It is very interesting. If you want to learn theory this is good place to start.
  • Tyler46
    Great information
I have been playing guitar for 30 years. Always played cords and a blu s scale. This podcast helped me merge my guitar players by with my knowledge of music from other instruments. Also you don’t need to have your guitar the info will come to you when playing your favorite songs. A show you need to listen to if you want to become a better guitarist!!!
  • Kuku ka choo
    Simply taught!
This guy breaks it down in a way that really makes it easy to get better, faster than you could on your own! He’s already invented the wheel, why would I try to reinvent it?! The best part is he doesn’t force any specific style down your throat! I listened to all the old podcasts over and over. And I’m so happy the he decided to keep going and make new episodes! Keep going Desi!

    Essential
Desi has been on fire lately with his latest round of podcasts, YouTube videos and blogs. I own all his books and they are good as well. But these podcasts are a good accomplishment to the books and videos with a little more detail. Well done!

    Excellent, Very Helpful
Desi Serna revived his podcast this month and it was helpful to hear more about all of the content he has created, podcasts, streaming content - both free and premium. His recent episode motivated me to dig into the Guitar Theory lessons and helped me iron out a progression of learning that suits where I am now on the guitar. Now I know the best way to spend my time and enjoy my learning journey. Thanks Desi.

    The Best!
I’ve read many books and seen many YouTube videos that cannot hold a candle to these lessons.
  • Whenitblakes
    Great learning tool!
I’ve been listening to this podcast to try and have a better fundamental understanding of my guitar playing and music in general. It has been a lot of help and there have already been a few times during listening that I have had an a-ha moment where things clicked. Especially regarding major scale relationships with different modes. Thanks for the lessons!
  • Marvin1cat
    Fantastic podcast
Having played guitar, off and on, for many years, rarely does one find a gifted teacher like Desi. From complex concepts to seemingly simple suggestions, Desi has made “Physics” seem like “Addition.”
  • aligntrex450
    A new approach
I’ve played since 1980 and studied classical in college and taught. I doubted I would learn anything new but was looking for a new perspective on learning... starting with throwing out the old school high E string traditions and focusing on visual patterns from the get go intrigued me and I am integrating some of his advice into my outdated practice methods... teaching an old dog new tricks!
