Dissecting The 80s

48

Tripp and Andrew Laino have been watching movies together since 1992, and making fun of them together since 1999, when a rainy afternoon of babysitting turned into 8 hours of cheesy science fiction and jokes. Raised on a strict diet of 80s movies, the pair have an undying love for the decade and all of the weird, wonderful cinema therein, despite barely being there for it. Every other week (since 2014) they dissect a movie and the bizarre cinema quirks of 30-odd years ago.

You can be both a star and a character actor
Example Marjorie Main, of course Hollywood is very different now but I still think you can definitely be both, hard disagree with the other point of view

    Two Brothers - Too Fun!
I have enjoyed the Dissecting the 80s podcast for years, and feel deep seeded shame that I have not left it a positive review until now. I have enjoyed every episode since the beginning, even though I wasn't there for it, I have dug deep into their back catalog. I also adore their differing perspectives, the amount of analysis and research they put into each film, and the long, meandering comedic roads they travel down for extended journeys until they realize they probably should continue their review. It is rare to find a podcast that exclusively explores films from my childhood (as a late era Gen-Xer) that also is willing to peer through a modern lens and call out any outdated stereotypes and tropes while not pulling punches (which I greatly appreciate as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community). Tripp, Andrew, keep up the fantastic work, never change, and you will have this listener for as long as you make podcasts.

Great Movie Podcast!! Hilarity and Nostalgia Rolled into One!
Absolutely love listening to these brothers every other week! Their comedic timing and encyclopedic movie knowledge makes listening fun and informative. It’s always fun to listen even when they review movies I’ve never seen before. They do an amazing job of catching me up on the plot while still making jokes and sprinkling in fun trivia facts about the movie. In fact, I’ve watched a couple of 80s movies based on their recommendation and they did not disappoint! Pro tip: if you haven’t seen the movie before, you should listen then watch the movie then listen again. You have a different POV for each listen and it’s like getting 2 podcast episodes for the price of one! Definite recommend for anyone who enjoys 80s classics, movie trivia, or just comedy in general! Can’t wait for the day they do The Neverending Story, and maybe sing a Stranger Things style duet...? Keep up the great work, boys!

    Can’t stop listening
I discovered Dissecting the 80s on a recent road trip to New Orleans and can’t stop listening. Tripp and Andrew are hilarious, and being a Reagan baby I feel connected to pretty much every subject they bring up. This podcast makes my horrendous DC commute much more enjoyable as I’m making my way through their entire catalog. I look forward to their future podcasts and hope to see them at a future podcast festival. This podcast is for you if you like any 80s.

    Good show
This is a good show; not terrific, not great, but worth your time if you enjoy podcasts about film and cinema. It is in my Top 6 for movie podcasts. The hosts are quite amiable and they generally do their research before turning on their mics ( if you're going to discuss movies, take notes and do your homework) so they know what they want to say before they record the show. Kudos to you fellas for that. Though these two have been doing this ‘cast for some time, they occasionally sound a bit unpolished but not to the point of being unbearable; in fact sometimes it’s charming; you feel like you’re just hanging out. Every once in a while, they get into a deep dive and it can drag a bit but that doesn’t happen very often nor does it last long. The hosts are engaging, funny, thoughtful and generally have good insights into the films they choose. As with all podcasts; I’ve listened to six episodes before writing this review; just to be fair. It is worth my time to listen. Give this show a try.

    My favorite brothers!
One of the first movie podcasts I discovered and also one of my faves. Tripp and Andrew are a great duo taking us on a journey of crazy 80s movies. Even when they cover a movie (ie horror) I would never watch, I still listen to the episode because I really enjoy hearing their discussion and hilarious insight. Military bullets!!!

    Radical
This is one of my favorite podcasts. Most of the movies that I have seen that they dissect makes me want to watch them again. As for the ones that I haven't seen, they make me want to check them out. There are also the movies that I have seen but forgot about and listening to Tripp and Andrew bring it all back. I like that a lot of the movies they do are available on most major platforms ie:Netflix, Hulu, AmazonPrime... Keep at it fellas!

    I'm pretty obsessed
As someone who's spent a ridiculous amount of time watching 80's film, I am so thankful for this podcast! I had the pleasure of meeting Tripp a few months ago and he happened to mention that he had a podcast with his brother Andrew. I started with the Teen Witch episode and have been hooked every since. Their hilarious commentary filled with snarky remarks and references that others might consider obscure comforts me as I realize that I'm not alone in Eighties Nerd Universe. Listening and laughing along with them has not only brought up some great memories but encouraged me to check out some movies that never came across my radar. Thanks for being so awesome guys, I love the show and hope that you'll someday consider putting out weekly episodes😄.

    Thoroughly Enjoyable
I met Tripp over the summer, and he was perfectly charming, so when he said he had a podcast, I decided to give it a listen. I honestly expected to listen for a couple of minutes just to say I had (up until now, I hadn't really been able to get into podcasts), but months later, I find myself looking forward to every other Monday and halfway through the back catalogue in the meantime (trying to pace myself, with varying degrees of success). Tripp and Andrew are so much fun. They are witty and engaging, and they offer a great balance of humor and insight. The whole podcast feels like a series of inside jokes that the audience is let in on, and it's just great. Thanks guys. I love it.

    Workplace Saviors
I'll be honest, I started listening to the guys because I know them. I am continuing to listen to them because they are frequently hilarious and always fun. I've chewed through the backlog in a matter of 2 weeks at work and now I'm sad that I'm gonna have to wait for new episodes like everybody else. If you need some entertainment in your life, these guys provide.

Amazing Podcast about the Hidden Treasures of the 80s
If you remember the 80s at all, then you will love this show. They do a fantastic job of covering things you will remember again once they mention it. Everyone knows the big stuff like Back to Future, but what about Teen Witch? The show is super fun and nostaglic. Highly reccomend.

    Hilarious, informative and entertaining!
Not typically a fan of podcasts/talk radio but I love these guys and their unique and clever way they dive into movies from the 80s. Good, bad or just down right terrible, they will watch it and give an honest and witty review. My favorites so far are 9-5, Ghost and of course Back to the Future 2. Keep it up guys, you are amazing!!
  • Crabcakequeen57
    Great sarcasm and wit!!!
These two bring fun and new insights to both good and bad movies from those crazy 80s! Their young perspective is highly entertaining and hilarious! Keep up the good work guys!!

    Time Machine of Madness
It's easy to remember the 1980s as an age of awesome action movies (Top Gun, Predator) and even more awesome music (Kenny Loggins, New Order). This podcast seeks to revel in the more sordid side of the 80s, and plumbs a lot of great comedy and witty repartee out of the effort. Can't wait for them to tackle Red Dawn.
