Jughead's Basement

104

Jughead's Basement is hosted by Screeching Weasel, Mopes, and Even In Blackouts' co-founder John Jughead Pierson.  The podcast has three subcategories: Dissections of punk records.  Long-form interviews of punk & alternative musicians, comedians, and underground performers.  Plus, lastly, an old fashion radio adventure that tells the twisted tale of two men attached to one body roaming an unknown mansion meeting and interviewing different guests every episode.

Love all of the stories and insight behind my favorite subjects
Long time listener and love every level of evolution John has put into this podcast. The origional concept of breaking down albums which morphed into lofi interviews with hifi guests and recently catching up with friends as a repeat guest segment have all been incredible. As a longtime lover of og pop punk I love learning more about how that scene transpired but John takes it much further that rehashing the past as well as catching up with what the who’s who of that genera have been up to. Everything from chats with favorite comedians like Kyle Kinane, business talk with the creator of Liquid Death and Larry Livermore (Lookout Records), as well as Mass Georgini’s (master producer of Sonic Iguana studios and squirtgun singer and Bass) authority of knowledge on Don Quixote, and philosophy talk with everyone that will venture that road. I learn something from every single episode. Thank you!

    Not a Regular Interview Podcast
Jughead brings a unique style to interviewing with great insight and I love way he edits any corrections or insights directly into the podcast. Unmatched guest list.

    Well researched and engaged conversations
John’s episodes have evolved over the years. He continuous to do an amazing job digging into the background of each guest which helps him to engage in an interesting and effective manner. I have come to learn many facts and back stories on many of my favorite bands and musicians, esp most recently both Vindictives and Kody T (Lillingtons, SACK and TBR). I also appreciate that John doesn’t only stick to guests within the genre of his own bands. Recommended!

    Great Interviews
I always look forward to new episodes. Jughead has a warm and friendly conversational style with just a touch of silliness. His interviews are thoughtful and informative and great for any fans of punk or punk-adjacent music.

    One of my favorite podcasts
I initially started listening based on who the guests were. Now I sometimes find the episodes with people I don’t know anything about to be the most interesting. John’s conversations are consistently engaging and entertaining.

    New Favorite.
I think I’ve found my new favorite podcast. Jughead has an amazing way of interviewing guests. It’s a down to earth, relaxed and intellectual conversation that keeps you engaged and makes you feel like you’re in a room with a couple of good friends. I listened to the Justin Sane episode and found myself smiling and laughing along with you guys. Justin just may be one of the most incredible humans alive. Thanks Jughead. That was a pleasure to listen to. Peace!

    A different type of interview
Jughead has a deeply personal type of interview style, where he discusses feelings and mental struggles he had as a musician and gets into some creative discussions where you learn way more about someone than the typical interview. You can tell he prepared for the discussion and asks great questions to lead the interview into a sometimes dark but fascinating place. His quirky style takes a little while to get used to, but it generates laughs, tears and is perfect for the commute. Thank you John!

    Great podcast
What a great podcast! I enjoy the guests, I often have to stop the show to make notes about bands mentioned(and almost always like them when I listen). A great smattering of 80’s to current. It’s kind of like being a fly on the wall listening to interesting conversations.

Jughead’s podcast has great interviews with awesome guests. Many of whom are in the punk rock scene in current bands or currently dissolved bands. All of which you need to know and need to hear! Great stories and greater tunes. This podcast is a blast and a joy bringer.

Jugheads conversational style of interviewing is the best. With awesome guests that are super entertaining and worth listening to I think this is the best podcast around!!! Nick Spoon

    The best punk podcast.
This is my favorite podcast right now…I came to it as a fan of the musicians involved, but was immediately won over by Jughead’s curiosity for life and people. There’s structure, but enough spontaneity to keep every episode unique and interesting. You don’t have to be a fan of the guests to enjoy and learn something new!

Each episode has so much punk wisdom for lifers
Came here for the Weasel affiliation like I’m sure many of you, but stayed for the excellent interviews. I’m a journalist and love how well researched he is about his subjects, it is definitely an art. I can’t wait to go back in the archives and see what I’ve missed out on.

    Love it! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I give this podcast 6 stars. I love how enjoyable it is to listen to. Even if you’re not familiar with the artist he is interviewing, it’s still such interesting conversations. Also, you always get awesome Jughead stories as a bonus 🤘🏻

    Awesome podcast!
Really refreshing how John runs these episodes and the conversations are fantastic. A hidden gem show that shouldn’t be a hidden gem at all! There’s so many podcasts obviously but for some reason I’ve only been waiting and listening to this show only. Keep it going Jughead!

I thought this was about basements!
Really surprised to find out that this was recorded in a basement and wasn’t actually ABOUT basements, however, what an incredible discovery! If you’re vaguely familiar 90’s-00’s midwestern punk, you’ll find some real gems in these interviews. Jughead pulls some really seldom heard from guests that are a real treat to listen to!

Love listening to Jughead chatting with folks from the early days of pop punk and IL music scene as well as the crazy theatre arthaus stories he has on! Seriously-down to earth and full of awesome tales. Thank you for making this, John! Ps-loved sharing the stage with you when you were in EIB!!!

    Excellent Podcast
Jughead has proven that he is a man of many crafts, and the podcast format suits him very well indeed. His literary and theater talents are on full display, and his historical knowledge of the punk scene serves him well in the interviews he conducts. His conversational style is pleasing to listen to, and the new Polycephela Aporia series is a real triumph, combining his love for theater and storytelling with his already familiar interviewing style. A great contribution to the scene that will become part of his storied legacy as an artist.

Jugheads Basement Episode 36 feat. Ryan Singer
Thanks for the informative podcast interviews. This episode rocked! Cool hearing about his perspective of Navajo life and art with the punk music influence.

This is great. Please keep doing it!
The album/band dissections were absolutely amazing. I couldn’t believe it really. I never thought I’d have the privilege to listen to a meditation on records like Hypno Punko! So so so very happy this exists. BUT! If it can’t be frequent then I’m so ok with the lo-fi interviews in the meantime. These are great. Please keep doing it!

All the facts. None of the fat!
As an amateur musician and extremely amateur pop punk archeologist, this podcast scratches two deep itches for me. John, an expert in both disciplines, is thorough, sincere, and agile in these extremely well curated, well researched, well intentioned interviews. Jughead proves to be a benevolent pop punk librarian of sorts, and here we are in some strange nether region of the Dewey decimal system, laughing and remembering the tiniest detail of some long forgotten show/scene/band. I do appreciate the earnest way John tackles the often totally absurd nature of the subject matter. It’s the best part. If you crave true life stories of long lost punk, this podcast will nourish and excite you!

    The Chronicles of Punk
John is an excellent interviewer, bringing out great moments from guests to share and wonderful to listen to stories from the scene so many of us were a part of, supporter of or even inspired by. The show gets better and more solid which each episode and John goes one on one with so many bands, singers, songwriters and true creative artists who shaped and lead the punk scene we grew up with and talks about the music that is still playing loudly on turntables, ipods, cassette decks, online or on disc – and of course LIVE.

A podcast that's worth your time.
Jughead's Basement is a wonderfully arranged look at albums of great significance to John and many of us alike in the genres of but not limited to, pop punk/punk rock/rock n' roll. Each episode is a collection of fantastic interviews with band members, studio personnel, label owners, and other closely related characters of importance to the record being honored. Interviewees range from the highly celebrated to rare. These interviews are always meticulous yet highly entertaining, touching on the subject at hand but due to John's experience, paired with a relaxed and welcoming demeanor can lead to many other cool side stories. This creates a very much "fly on the wall view", giving a look at something you might love dearly and feel you know well but are happy in learning something new as a result of the show. The next part to compliment this display of music appreciation at it's finest are the writer's segments done by many different types of music lovers affected by the album that are carefully chosen by John ranging from very well known zine owners to, to a member of his theater group, to an everyday person with great passion just to give a few examples of the many that have already participated. It's completely different every time with what you can expect to hear from each writer but also very personal and relatable in seeing how each writer's life has been touched by the album. All these pieces of the podcast fit together like a time capsule you can both appreciate and feel very much a part of because the music belongs to all of us after all!! I highly recommend Jughead's Basement to anyone who feels a connection to music, be it your way of life, or you might just want to learn more. This podcast will give you a new reason to fall in love.
