Boston Blackie Podcast; Master Detective

214

Boston Blackie is a fictional character who has been on both sides of the law. As originally created by author Jack Boyle, he was a safecracker, a hardened criminal who had served time in a California prison. Prowling the underworld as a detective in adaptations for films, radio and television, the detective Boston Blackie was "an enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend."The Boston Blackie radio series, starring Chester Morris, began June 23, 1944, on NBC as a summer replacement for The Amos 'n' Andy Show. Sponsored by Rinso, the series continued until September 15 of that year. Lesley Woods appeared as Blackie's girlfriend Mary Wesley, and Harlow Wilcox was the show's announcer. On April 11, 1945, Richard Kollmar took over the title role in a radio series syndicated by Frederic W. Ziv to Mutual and other network outlets. Over 200 episodes of this series were produced between 1944 and October 25, 1950. Other sponsors included Lifebuoy Soap, Champagne Velvet beer and R&H beer.

    The best!
I’m so glad I found this! My dad talked about old radio shows and he he told me about this one and a few others. My kids and I have been experiencing the same thing my father did all those years ago.

    Odd sound
It’s as if the sound is slowed down so that Holmes sounds like Hitchcock. Very odd.

    Hated the Australian Commercials
In the middle of the performance, crashing music and unusual commercials appear in the odd intervals. Very dismaying while enjoying the very enjoyable episodes.

    Sound issues
Sorry, great idea for a pod, but the extreme changes in volume make it too hard to listen to it. Unless you want to hold your device and be willing to adjust the volume 2-4 times per sentence.

    Terrible sound quality
The ads at the beginning are crystal clear but the actual story has so much noise. Couldn't make it through one minute.

Good - but half of the Dracula episode is missing
Half of Sherlock Holmes vs Dracula is missing! Any chance we could get the second half? I've read the book. The radio drama follows it well.

    Awesome!
I absolutely LOVE this podcast! I listen to it all the time, and it never gets old. These stories are riveting, highly enjoyable, and masterfully done. Basil Rathbone is perfect as Sherlock and this podcast is perfect for hearing good Sherlock stories.

Wish they would come out faster
I especially love the episodes with Rathbone and Bruce in the leads. Please update more frequently!

    Come on!
This is a really good mystery podcast and also a who-done-it sort of story that leaves you guessing until the end. But there hasn't been anything new in two weeks! Send out some more, please!

The quality is not great; probably due to age
Probably because of the quality of the original sound recordings being used, the quality of these podcasts is impaired. This can make it very difficult to hear in noisier environments (while on the street or in a car). The original sponsor messages are a curiosity and add to the old time feel.

enjoyable, but where are the new episodes?
I have enjoyed listening to this podcast, but where are the new episodes? Nothing since Christmas Eve.

    Great podcast but some glitches
I have been listening for a while and really enjoy the stories, but about a month ago the podcast lengths changed from about 40 minutes to more than 2 hours. I think there is a problem that Mr. Humphrey needs to attend to. I'm cancelling my subscription for now, but will check back in a month in hopes that the problem is solved.

    Brilliant
As always, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's brilliant tale of the most complex character of his time. Always intriguing, always good listening.

    Sherlock Holmes
This podcast is great! The only bad parts are the brakes in the middle of most of the episodes.
