What It's Like To Be...

Curious what it would be like to walk in someone else’s (work) shoes? Join New York Times bestselling author Dan Heath as he explores the world of work, one profession at a time, and interviews people who love what they do. What does a couples therapist think when a friend asks for relationship advice? What happens if a welder fails to wear safety glasses? What can get a stadium beer vendor fired? If you’ve ever met someone whose work you were curious about, and you had 100 nosy questions but were too polite to ask … well, this is the show for you.

The Irish Barman is the BEST!
I have listened to this podcast from the beginning and this is a top 3 episode by far. He was SO funny and likable, yet down to earth and incredibly engaging. His accent obviously makes all the difference and the whole conversation makes me want to travel to Ireland and hang out with him. Thank you Dan for another wonderful episode, you’re crushing it!

    One of the best!
I’ve loved this show since the beginning. The jobs are each unique and yet the common humanity makes each episode universal. I listen to a lot of podcasts, but this one is my go to if there’s a new release, I’m always in the mood to listen. All the best!

    Real People Doing the Everyday
Gosh! I love this podcast! I recently found it via another podcast where Dan was a guest. Therefore, I had to catch up on the first season. What a delight! Dan is an excellent interviewer, allowing the guest to answer, hearing the responses then nicely following up. The guests are relatable, like able, real folks and neighbors. Thanks Dan.

    Love this show!
Reconnected with following Dan Heath recently, and somewhere along the way, I discovered this podcast. It is fun, upbeat, and a positive look into the lives of others that we don’t often get. Thanks for the breath of fresh air so that we can live vicariously through others!

    A breath of fresh air
After hearing the host on The Lost Debate, I was intrigued by the premise of the show. Then I was delighted by the content. In five days, I consumed about half of the episodes. I have since interspersed the balance of the shows throughout my podcast routine, rationing these puffs of fresh air for when my regular fare gets too grim - an all-to-common occurrence. Three huzzahs for positivity and curiosity!

This is one of my favorite podcasts and I look forward to each new episode. The show is fun and informative. I love getting a peek behind the scenes of different careers. I always learn something new. Dan does a great job of summarizing the key points from the interview as well as drawing connections to the other careers he’s covered. Dan is a terrific interviewer and a pleasure to listen to.

    Surprising and Interesting
After listening to a few episodes I decided to start at episode 1 and listen to all of them. This is a terrific show, The people have such enthusiasm about their jobs, and often focus on what they love. The welder was particularly delightful, he’s good at what he does, knows it and knows why. Dan Heath does a terrific job of making regular people good interview subjects. I highly recommend this podcast.

    Fantastic Podcast
Just found this podcast and binged about 6 episodes. This is just fantastic. I usually hate “conversational” podcasts, but not this one. It is so informative, so engaging and really keeps my interest. My absolute favorite was the Navy Aircraft Carrier Commander ! Especially love the Lightning Round questions….i always learn something new. Thanks for making these and please keep it up.

This is absolutely my favorite podcast and I eagerly await every new episode. With so much bad news, this show reminds us that our country is filled with interesting, caring people working in a wide variety of professions. Dan’s interview style reflects a curiosity and great respect for each guest. It is fascinating to get an inside peek into a wide variety of professions. Have recommended this to family and friends.

    Great listen!
No I didn’t just cry listening to the Stadium Beer Vendor episode 🙈. I’ve recently discovered this podcast and have enjoyed every episode. Dan is a great interviewer and he’s found some really interesting people. There’s so many jobs that we take for granted, and taking the time to learn about what they actually do is so interesting!

It’s like actually BEING someone else for 20 minutes
In brief yet dense and intense episodes, Dan Heath takes us through a lifetime of someone else’s experience not to glance at it from the exterior, but to explorer what it truly means to live a life in a certain profession. To me, as a podcast fanatic, EVERYTHING about this show hits the right notes. The diversity of guests, the naturally of conversations, the perfect editing and even Dan’s clarifications for context. Even something as trodden and worn out as the closing “five questions” format, Dan masterfully uses to gain a refreshing glimpse into the guests, that even themselves are often heard saying “nobody had ever asked me that!" It sounds exaggerated, but this podcast is changing NOT my days, but my life, as a man in my 50s seeking a career change after 15 years teaching, I find it utterly refreshing as I realize that whether a long-haul truck driver, or a cold-drink server at stadiums, what matters is not what you do, but how you let it shape you. One episode every two weeks hasn’t been enough so I’ve gotten some of Dan’s audiobooks now. Just awesome stuff. THANK YOU!!

Must check this out. Even jobs I thought I was familiar with, or that I wouldn’t be interested in, I learned something and enjoyed the interview.

    Every Job-Fascinating!
I have listened to EVERY episode available. Since I was late to the party, I had loads of episodes to play. NOW I have to wait for the next drop and I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas!!! When I first began following this show, some of the jobs listed by title didn’t call my name or intrigue me -listen anyway! Dan and the interviewees ALWAYS make it interesting and entertaining!!! He could interview a toothpick inspector and 100% sure it’d be captivating!
  • Mrelano
    Engaging and heartwarming
My fave part is the end: when Dan summarizes the interview. He captures the essence of the job, and puts into words the little details or nuances that may have been missed. No job is too insignificant.

    Wholesome and needed
I absolutely love this podcast! I was listening to Alan Alda’s podcast, “Clear and Vivid”, and Dan was on! I just love the premise! Short, digestible episodes (although, I’d never be mad at longer episodes!) I just love Dan’s inquisitive approach because you can tell he truly is engaged with his guests Thank you so much for doing this podcast. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to turn my brain off and connect with complete strangers. Absolutely phenomenal

    Love this show
What It’s Like To Be…is exactly the type of show we all need. It’s not murder and mayhem. It’s not news or politics. It’s not some “self help” pseudoscience. It’s just everyday people talking about their experiences. No stress, no fuss. I look forward to each episode. Well done Dan!

Don’t be misled by its low key premise: every episode is fascinating! It’s so gratifying to hear what motivates each of the interviewees. I have learned a lot and admire Dan for his ability to create room for conversations that reveal the magic in our daily lives.

    Empathy Builder
Empathy is a skill critical for leadership and frankly for just being a decent human. Dan Heath’s podcast What It’s Like to Be is a phenomenal way to up your empathy game through its behind-the-scenes look at individual’s daily exploration of daily life across different professions. Some professions which are glamorized by media and others that perhaps don’t get the appreciation warranted.
  • MariaInz
    Enlightening!
I love this podcast! So happy I found it. Interesting people and topics. It brings to light what some people do on a daily basis. The length of the episodes is just the right amount of time. Not super long where you cannot finish in one sitting, yet long enough to get to know the person and their job/career.
  • DuckDiva🐥
    Love it!

    TOP 3 BEST PODCASTS!!!!
Freaking love this podcast. For a naturally curious person, I look forward to every episode. Who knew learning about welding, refereeing or interior design could be so cool? I love learning about other professions and what people can teach me. YOU GOTTA LISTEN TO THIS! ❤️

    Just excellent!
I listen to a broad range of podcasts, but this has to be one of my favorites. It’s informative, engaging, and wholesome, and both the host and the guests are top-notch. Dan, the host, asks interesting questions in such a way that allows his guests to shine. In a world of divisive political podcasts and serial killer stories, this show is a lovely break from the darkness.

    Want to 10x Your Curiosity?
If Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe whet your appetite for what real people do for a living, then What It’s Like to Be… will catapult your curiosity to another level! I’ve loved this podcast series from Episode 1 and can’t wait for another to release every couple weeks. Dan’s discerning and encouraging ability to ask astute questions that mine fresh insights from people’s work has inspired me to ask better questions when I’m out and about. I’ve uncovered parallels from widely different professions that apply in so many settings. Still on the fence about this podcast? Dive in. It may sound like the start of a bad joke, but you’ll be surprised what you can learn from A Professional Santa Claus, A Secret Service Agent, and A Life Insurance Salesman.

    Great Variety of Guests
I’ve read many of the Heath brother’s books, some thought I’d try out this podcast. I’m really enjoying it! There’s no better way to empathize with others in different jobs than to walk a mile in their shoes through hearing them tell of their daily experiences. Thanks Dan!
