In the Shadows

In The Shadows delves into a riveting unsolved mystery from 1991. When the body of a young woman is discovered by two terrified boys in the desert near Bakersfield, California, authorities quickly target her popular star-athlete boyfriend. The case - one of the most controversial in Kern County’s history - quickly drew national media attention, and the ensuing trials divided the community and sparked a heated debate. Despite that, the perpetrator of this horrific crime remained unpunished. 32 years after the murder, a fresh investigation conducted by this podcast takes an unexpected turn when several individuals reveal shocking information previously unknown by authorities and the public alike.

    Boring
This podcast would have been amazing with a different host. This host is BORING BORING BORING. disappointed. Her voice has no excitement, dramatic changes, it’s mellow and boring the entire time. Literally puts me to sleep.

So boring I couldn’t finish it
The first 3 episodes were ok, but then I was bored to tears. I wouldn’t recommend this podcast.

    Interesting and tragic
Listened to the entire podcast in one afternoon. Tragic cycle of abuse and violence. Podcaster has a bright future.

    Good podcast, issues with narration
I was interested in the podcast and trudged through the painfully slow speaking narrator. Her voice is nice but the speaking was too slow for my brain lol. Also narrator is flat and dull throughout. I think the narrator has potential, just needs to bring it up a notch …

    Has Potential
I think the host has potential for future stories. I don't mind the pacing at all. There are issues with pronunciation of words though and at times I felt like I was listening to an elementary kid reading from a book. Just takes more practice is all. What I didn't like about the content was race being an issue for inequity (against white people) when clearly the accused, being a black male, had privilege most people don't. His parents were able to afford him an attorney and bail money. Plus, the Hispanic family didn't like him simply because he's black. Having said that, I don't believe he did it. There wasn't enough evidence to prove it and his actions after he was released show a big aspect to that. He got a job and aside from the drugs, he didn't show any pattern of abuse towards women that was reported. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. A side note: this story is a good example as to why it's important that if you plan to live in another country, you do it legally and learn the language. That could also be why some of the people that knew Victor didn't speak up. I really wish they had.

Starts of good, goes down hill
The podcast starts off great. It’s intriguing, and keeps the story moving forward. The middle few episodes really aren’t needed imho. It starts to delve into random persons pasts that don’t really have that much to do with the actual case. I felt like those episodes could have been condensed into one 5-10 minute section

    Interesting Podcast
I loved this podcast. Dragonfly follows the 1993 unsolved murder of music executive Brett Cantor. The cold case investigation tracks the history of Brett’s case from 1993 to 2023, highlighting other high profile crimes that may be connected to Brett’s murder. The series features interviews with Brett’s family, friends, other music promoters he worked with, and the original homicide detectives assigned to the case. It’s super interesting and gives you an inside look at what happened to Brett. Also, they share new leads in the case. Another excellent podcast from Casefile, I binged the whole series. RIP Brett, I hope his case gets solved.

    Sensitive approach to subject matter
One of the better true crime podcasts I’ve heard recently. I’m guessing the one star reviews are from the audiochuck crowd.

    Hard narration
It’s surprising to have a show like this on Wondery, which is usually such a slam dunk. I can’t bear to listen to some one just read a idcast to me. I had to just turn it off on episode 2

    Boring narration
Terrible story but I can’t keep focused on the narrative

    Narration is poor
I’m trying to stay engaged with the story but the narrator is just not very engaging and I’m not sure she has enough investigative journalism experience to pull this off.

    Seriously?
So this is being advertised as previously available only through a subscription to wondery+ and in fact is still only available through a subscription to wondery+ Fix that casefile!

    Great Story But…
The story is interesting and quite moving in its dept[iction of generational trauma, but the clearly inexperienced reporter is just not up to a task that requires aggressive investigation and critical reflection. Too bad. And may I say that charging for content of this quality is too close to sharp practice.

    Binged it in a day
Well researched and written. A powerful story. Bless the victim’s family and I wish them all the best!

    It’s the voice…
Sorry, but I’m perplexed by the production pro who listens to this host and says, “yeah, this sounds great.” I couldn’t get through 5 mins of the first episode, so I’m bummed that I won’t learn much about this California desert story.

    Unlistenable
Writing and editing is pretty good, narration is so bad that even for free I cannot listen to this.
  • Laurak829
    Subscription only podcast
I listened to the first episode. Then I realized all the rest of the episodes were subscription only podcasts. Would not have wasted my time on the first one.
  • MNBree
    Poor narration
The narrator sounded unprofessional. This could have been half as long there were a lot of unnecessary tangents. Did the narrator really say Mike Tyson biting the ear of a man is more scandalous than the rape of a woman??
  • mama24boyz
    So many victims.
The story is so tragic on so many levels. Besides Maria, I think the biggest victim here is Mirasol. How she can forgive her mother for doing what she did, speaks volumes of her as a human being. I’m so happy she has gone on to live a good life. There is very little doubt that Victor was Maria’s killer. Thank God Offord was the star athlete he was otherwise he would have spent his life in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.

    Well done
This podcast series is well written, researched, and produced. It really drags you in and keeps you binging it until the end. I look forward to more releases from Ottavia.

    Terrible narration
The narrator delivery is very monotone. They need a professional to take over. Story is intriguing. However, I couldn’t make it past the first episode because of the unprofessional narration.

    Bummed
I was getting into it and then realized you have to pay to listen to the rest and I was bummed.

    Wondery subscription
To many podcasts are asking for subscriptions now and they don’t have enough shows to keep you interested for 5+ dollars a month… dumb never listen to anything by Wondery again 👎
  • BeckyFriedman
    Incredible, heartbreaking and riveting.
I binged this podcast in about 2 days. Fantastic storytelling. I think this podcast could very well make a difference in Maria’s case in the future. My heart goes out to her incredible family 💕

    Great research!
I love the amount of research that was put into this!
  • Equal Truth
DIG DEEPER NARRATOR/MORE CUPS of JOE MAYBE??
I think there’s probably a good story underneath but the narrator needs some Expresso shots in her cups of Joe each episode & I think it would give it a little “Kick” that keeps fans interested & hanging on for the full journey to the ending!! But otherwise good job & keep up the good stories & the hard work!!!

    Ehhh…boring.
I’ve listened to many of stories like this one and to say I was disappointed would be an understatement. Wasn’t very captivating. Narrator was boring, don’t have any shocking bombs, or uncovered anything new. Need to get like Tenderfoot Tv! They have great story tellers!
  • logrbyf
    Sad but boring
There are millions of cases like this. This was boring. I kept waiting for the big moment and it never happened.

    So so
Little Boring . Only gonna finish it cause I’m on episode 5 but it’s not keeping my interest . Narrator is boring . Story is lackluster

    Just Amazing
This is a great story so far. Can't wait to listen more after work. Love the writing and her voice!!

    Really took me by surprise
This podcast covers a once very well known case and I thought it was open and shut. But this podcast totally made me question everything I’d thought about the case before. The journalist also did an incredible job of covering very difficult and complex topics of generational sexual abuse and violence. Highly recommend.
