The World's Hardest Puzzle

61

Archive is an investigative documentary series hosted by Tommie Trelawny and Nicky Anderson. Following the success of The Interruption, listeners can expect another captivating story from Season Two: The World's Hardest Puzzle.

In 2012, a mysterious organisation known as Cicada 3301 announced itself on the message board, 4chan. The cryptic post appeared online, seeking 'highly intelligent individuals.' What followed became known as the hardest puzzle on the internet. One that took players across the internet and into real-world locations. After two years of enigmatic posting, it disappeared - and was never seen again. The final puzzle was never solved.

Nearly a decade later, Tommie Trelawny and Nicky Anderson decide to take on Cicada 3301 for themselves. Who was behind these mysterious puzzles? And what did they want to achieve?

    Sound quality is inconsistent
Really hard to hear some of the interviews and I was constantly toggling the volume. Otherwise interesting content.

    Badly edited and boring
I’m all for a good mystery - even an unsolved one. But there was so much redundant and duplicative content here, I actually checked multiple times to see whether I’d inadvertently skipped backwards. This was disorienting at first, but as I caught on to how often the show was repeating itself, it became straight up irritating. Especially given that the show wasn’t going to give us any answers, they at least could have offered us good storytelling.

    The World’s Hardest Puzzling Podcast
I am confused that Nicky receives a long email with attachments and contacts in episode seven, but doesn’t investigate them? Is it surprising that cyberpunks would not want to give out information? I am sure that is part of their manifesto! Secret groups are secret for a reason…that took a year of research? Plus, acting tense at anticlimactic things each episode is very tiring.

    Good stories, weird editing
First season I lost interest. Interesting story, and I love finding answers to these internet mysteries, but the nostalgic method of telling just didn’t hold my attention. Second season was more interesting, but what is up with the repetitive clips? For example, in episode 6, Nicky says the same sentence (something like, “I knew if I continued down this path of questioning…”) 4-5 times. I thought my phone was looping the player the first couple times it happened. Just very strange, why do this repeatedly?

    Waste of Time
So you go through 7 episodes where the purpose was purportedly to uncover something substantive about the person or persons behind Cicada 3301 and the puzzles. You fail and then try to gaslight the audience into believing this is really all about leaning into not knowing. What a complete waste of time. Feels more like you put in a year or more of effort and rather than just move on you’d rather try to convince us you discovered something profound in your complete failure. What a joke!

    They “find” Vrillon
Skip this one. Not bad quality, but slow. They tease finding the originator of the hijacked signal but it turns out it’s a terrible psychic who “channels” the figure Vrillon, but obviously doesn’t know anything revealing. A cheap trick to keep you listening.

    Declining Quality but still interesting
I am a huge fan of the Hochelaga Youtube channel. I thoroughly enjoyed the first series on The Interruption, but I was less impressed with The Archive series. The swapping back and forth between hosts was distracting, and the audio quality at times was less than stellar. When the host were talking to each other, sometimes only half the conversation is audible. I felt the show worked better with a singular host and a producer with occasional interjections. And no, this isn’t a criticism on Nikki, just the stylistic choice.

Engaging story with a great narrator
I just randomly ran across a link to this podcast in Reddit and decided to give it a try. I wasn’t expecting something this engrossing and good! Tommie’s narration is sparkling clean and easy to listen to, and the way he builds the story kept me engaged long past the 5 minute trial period I had set aside for the show to grab me. I hope he eventually makes more podcasts because I’d happily listen to them!

    Fun and interesting story
Such a nice fun and odd tale. Great production quality and presence from the host and they kept it interesting. Well edited and compact story that keeps you interested through the end. Grab this for a weekend binge or in your rotation.

    Not what I expected
I’m so accustomed to sort of over-the-top mystery podcasts that this one sneaked in and fully captured me. I enjoyed the host’s enthusiasm and wonder. Great, rather heartwarming conclusion, too. I hope there’s another season with a new mystery.

    Fascinating journey!
This was actually my first time listening to a podcast. I really enjoyed the journey and exploring different theories and the variety of guests! I couldn’t help smiling when the mystery was solved and the host’s enthusiasm. Fantastic job! Just a quick note for potential listeners- I listened to several episodes on a long car trip. While I could hear the host fine, I had difficulty hearing the interview portions even with my car volume on max. It sounded fine on my speaker at home so this could be the quality of my car speakers and highway road noise.

I really enjoyed this investigative podcast. Well done!

    Enjoyable romp!
An intriguing question - investigated with more vigor and fervor than I expected - making it an enjoyable trip down the rabbit hole. The host was interesting, amusing, and very enjoyable to listen to. And, frankly unexpectedly, the exploration came to a very satisfying conclusion. I wish there were more questions of this nature for this team to tackle (hint, hint).

    Great podcast
This was very entertaining and well written, I hope there are more investigations or stories to come :)

    Great work so far…
Well, had a strong interesting start, but the end wasn’t as good. I actually tuned out a few times over the last episodes, had to rewind, wish it was more consistent. But good first effort, it’s a different way to tell a story, not as succinct as the videos are, so hope they try again. Oh, very disappointed with the “medium” interview, as it seems that’s were this change from investigation to storytelling, and not true story, but fictional storytelling. ….. This is an interesting “case,” situation? Happening? Interruption, yes, great that they’re trying to find out what went on that day, so many years ago… I’m only starting episode 3, and the only regret I have is they gave too much information to the psychic at the beginning of the interview, but I haven’t finished listening, so maybe you throw a curveball at them later on? Not sure, hope the producer does :) still, very entertaining.

    A slick, engaging story
Just like his Youtube videos, this show is well researched and presented, and very engaging. A cool story to be along for the ride!

    Such a fun podcast!
Loved following along till the mystery was solved!! Hope there is another mystery to cover for a season 2!

    Strong start falls flat
This pod starts off pretty interesting giving the unique and high-ish stakes situation. The problem is that the way the case is “solved” is by someone joining a Facebook group where members had openly talked about who was responsible for it. Clearly that’s not going to fill 8 episodes so the middle ones are just a bunch of boring filler.

    Mixed opinions
It's an interesting subject, something worth making a podcast about. However, I recommend skipping episode 3. The host talks to a supposed psychic who claims to channel aliens. While the host doesn't take it seriously, and it could have been funny had it been a short joke, it went on far, far, far, too long.

    Awesome awesome content and pacing
Been a fan of the pacing and content style of theirs since youtube got excited about the podcast and it did not disappoint, the content is endlessly engaging and the pacing is easy and steady with a steady timber :)
