LA Made: The Barbie Tapes

“LA Made” is a series exploring stories of bold Californian innovators and how they forever changed the lives of millions all over the world. Each season will unpack the untold and surprising stories behind some of the most exciting innovations that continue to influence our lives today.

Season 3, "LA Made: The Other Moonshot," tells the story of three Black aerospace engineers in Los Angeles, who played a crucial role in America’s race to space, amid the civil unrest of the 1960s.  When Joanne Higgins was growing up in Compton in Los Angeles, she heard her godfather, Charlie Cheathem, tell stories about his key role in the Apollo mission to the moon. As an adult, she realized that his experiences — and those of other Black engineers — had been left out of the history books. She set out to record for the first time the accounts of these men, now in their 90s, whose crucial contributions to the early days of the Apollo mission have been overlooked — or taken credit for by others — despite their ingenuity and determination.

Season 2, “LA Made: The Barbie Tapes,” tells the backstory of the world’s most popular doll, Barbie. Barbie is a cultural icon but what do you really know about her? Hear Barbie's origin story from the people who created her. Co-hosted by Antonia Cereijido and M.G. Lord, author of Forever Barbie: The Unauthorized Biography of a Real Doll, hear the wild stories from never-before-heard tapes of interviews with Barbie inventor Ruth Handler, her wardrobe designer and the sculptors and fabricators, and the innovative marketers who made her what she is today. This 3-part series premieres July 6, 2023.

Season 1, “LA Made: Blood, Sweat & Rockets,” tells the hidden story of the fearless, groundbreaking and ambitious crew who shaped our quest to outer space and ushered in the early days of space exploration at Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at CalTech. Known as the “Suicide Squad,” the team’s road to triumph was fraught with controversies involving the occult, a suspected spy ring, unplanned explosions, and a suspicious death. Join writer and life-long aerospace fanatic M.G. Lord as she uncovers their story and reveals the shocking origins of rocket science in this 12 episode season.

An important and beautifully written story
Engaging, emotional, powerful. I laughed, gasped out loud, and cried as I listened. A timely story and I am glad it is finally being told.

    Inspired
Inspirational, moving and beautiful—to hear the voices of those that knew, always, that they were worthy and fought to demonstrate the power of I AM FREE! Thank you, 💔🕊️💙

An excellent history of JPL with one flaw
Overall an excellent history of the start of JPL. One comment - the current political bias should have been excluded. Perhaps MG might want to go back and edit her comments about Russian collusion in light of new information.

So fun learning more about my favorite doll
So glad I came across this podcast! I had read Forever Barbie a couple of years ago being a Barbie fan myself! Loved that book, getting to hear those tapes from M.G. Lords archives was such a treat! Thank you for creating such a fun podcast to listen to while working or doing daily life!

Barbie Tapes are 10/10 would 100% recommend
I could have listened to so many more episodes; it’s such a well put together production! Ruth is such an icon i especially enjoyed the bits about her life and how hard she fought for Barbie.

    Fascinating take on Barbie’s history
This is great if you’ve seen the movie, but it certainly stands on its own as a great story. Very interesting use of archival recordings with the creators of Barbie over the years.

    Barbie tapes is delightful
Antonia and MG are such fun co-hosts and have a great dynamic, I can’t wait for the rest of the episodes to drop!

    Disrespectful Host
I am having trouble finishing all episodes. Lord is so disrespectful towards communists and the OTO. What is wrong with other ideologies and religions? She obviously has read too many biased stories about the OTO. She acts like being a rocket scientist is the end all be all, the janitors of the building have just as an important job! Such biased reporting it’s very hard to listen to. I really wanted to hear this history but it’s not history it’s opinion. unfollowing!

    Interesting subject, questionable commentary
While the content of the podcast is great and the stories of each of the scientists, as well as the historic context surrounding them, are interesting and important, the incessant tongue-in-cheek commentary of the host is irritating at best and occasionally infuriating.

    I love MG Lord’s voice!
    And the podcast of course.

    Not worth the time
I stopped following this on the fourth episode. It was a fairly decent show up for the first three, but the host really threw her objectivity out the window on the fourth. The vitriol was quite shocking actually.

    Far too many commercials
The material is terrific but the number of interruptions is far beyond my expectations for contemporary podcasts. I know ya gotta eat, but really….

    I’m hooked!
Oh, Wow. This has it all. Tight writing, good voice work by MG Lord, great production values, lots of intrigue (the “suicide squad”?), historical importance, and even the hint of some very strong characters. I'm hooked!

    Rockets and Satanists
What a fascinating and important subject and a highly entertaining podcast. The host, MG Lord, author of a funny and insightful memoir and history about aerospace in SoCal, Astro Turf brings her droll appreciation for visionary outsiders to this story — which is everything but a simple celebration of rocket science. After this first episode, about a certain odd team of men who blow things up, we can’t wait for the story of Satanists who performed acts of Sex Magic. The twist: they are the same people. Even having read the memoir, I can’t wait for more!

Can’t wait for the next episode!
I loved it! MG Lord is an excellent host. Her unique voice makes it thrilling and exciting! Not to mention her extensive knowledge of the subject. Gave me the impression of a 1950’s sci-fi radio show.

Love The Subject, Needs a different Narrator
I love this story but I have a difficult time staying involved because of Lord’s voice (which grates on me after a few minutes).
