eart&musicInspired and accessibleI’m kind of a picky listener when it comes to podcasts but this one is top notch. I am an artist, musician and a geek about listening to anything having to do with the creative process. Scarlet’s conversations with her guests are down to earth and inspiring and I hope this podcast is around for a long long time. (My phone erased a star last time so I’m hoping this fixes it! Five stars!)

Michelle Rose musicThe Best Songwriting Podcast Out There! This podcast is unmatched! Scarlet gives incredible insight about songwriting. Her guests are all extremely successful in their careers. You couldn’t ask for a more impressive, star-studded lineup of guests for the interviews. The advice that’s given is invaluable. This is SUCH a fascinating podcast. I have learned so much from it! I’ve also taken many classes from Scarlet at Berklee College of Music and have learned soooo much from her. This podcast format is so convenient because I can listen to it throughout my day, and the guests she brings onto the show make the podcast material something that you wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else. She is a talented, successful songwriter who is very passionate about songwriting, and it rubs off on all of her students and anyone who listens to this podcast. She makes learning fun and exciting and ignites in her students an eagerness to learn more! I owe her so much. I didn’t know anything about songwriting before taking her classes, and now I’m able to write entire songs by myself, thanks to her!

SwingThing2008Songwriter paradiseThis podcast is essential listening for a songwriter. Writing songs is often such a solitary pursuit for me, so when I hear Scarlet talk with her AMAZING guests it brings me out of my shell to consider alternative techniques, perspectives, and attitudes.

lakey sLessons in CreativityI’m a singer songwriter - and a songwriter friend suggested listening to the What’s in a Song podcast. Wow!! Scarlet really understands how to pick away at the layers with each carefully curated guest. She makes the interview process sound so casual - and at the same she’s peeling the onion down to the deepest layer. I experience each episode as a deep dive in to the lessons of creativity. She ignores neither head nor heart. Scarlet gives us her amazing insight as a songwriter and academic in each episode -ironically leaving me both satisfied and always leaving me wanting more. I’ve recommended What’s in a Song to other songwriters, musicians, and non musicians- Scarlet never disappoints.

Shelbi AlesiaI love it here!Literally the best songwriting podcast out there. Scarlet asks all the right questions... and like why am I learning life lessons every episode? I come here for songwriting inspiration, and the guests each week feel like they’re talking right to me. This is my own little getaway to a world where I’m understood as a songwriter and everybody here gets it. Keep going Scarlet! I’m sooo grateful for this and YOU!

JohnLinesMust listeningThis isn’t just the best music podcast available; it’s one of the best podcasts, period. Full stop. Scarlet knows how to interview as well as Terry Gross and has stellar guests. The combination is, for the listener, the most enjoyable, information-filled, interesting, earbud-wearing hour of the week. Should get ten stars.

childoffridayAbsolute *must* for writersCertainly the best songwriting podcast I’ve ever heard, and one of the best writing podcasts in general. If you’re an experienced writer, a total novice, or even *thinking* about nourishing your creative self, you owe it to yourself to subscribe and listen.

Dansby SwansonSongwriting nerds rejoice!Scarlet’s interviews are so perfectly in-depth. She asks the questions we songwriters all want answers to, and not just what the casual fan may want to know, though there’s plenty of that, too. Scarlet and her guests break down the core elements of the craft of songwriting and creativity in general. After every episode, I can hardly wait to pick up a pencil and get to work. Thank you so much for this wonderful new resource!

Chill4healthIf you've ever wondered how songs are born...Then this podcast is for you. As someone who has been working with songwriters for decades and hearing nonmusicians questions about how songs get written for even longer, I highly recommend this podcast. It takes a highly individual process that usually only is discussed in the context of how individual hit songs got written to much deeper, broader, and more accessible levels. Scarlet is helping her guests to articulate the broader creative habits and patterns that help us all better understand the creative process. This podcast is an excellent companion to masterclasses in creativity like Elizabeth Gilbert's excellent "Your Elusive Creative Genius" TED talk, the Abstract and Chef's Table series on Netflix, Twyla Tharp's The Creative Habit, and Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way. Can't wait to see who Scarlet invites next and what I can learn from them.

luke alexIt gave me confidence as a young writerI’ve had Scarlet Keys as my professor at Berklee and she was by far my favorite professor! So when I heard she had a new podcast on songwriting I immediately checked it out! I’m moving to Nashville in a few weeks and was pretty nervous about my move over there but I listened to her podcast with Steve Leslie and it gave me so much confidence and peace in my move over there. I am currently more eager than ever to move and pursue on my dreams. Thanks for everything Scarlet!!!

cmurphylivesTop Notch!WHAT’S IN A SONG is chock full of insight and inspiration. jazzyourazzSuch Truths Told! This podcast is a must for anyone who seriously wants to be a professional songwriter. Full of so many inside industry and musical gems. If there’s something they’re talking about that you don’t totally understand, that’s good! This podcast will make any aspirational Songwriter who is really hungry, want to find out all the secrets of the trade that are being discussed. Like back in the day when you would go scour the jacket card of your favorite album. It’s honest, it’ truth, its conversational, its real world. Stunning first episode with Steve Leslie! I can’t wait to hear more!

JAF1968Delightful and InformativeAn inspiring and entertaining podcast about songwriting. Such a good balance between down-and-dirty advice for songwriters and fish stories about the odd animals who swim in these murky waters. If you've read host Scartlet Keys' fine book "The Craft of Songwriting" or taken one of her Berklee classes or workshops, you'll be familiar with her engaging and fun way of presenting actionable information about the songwriting process. This podcast is another way we can access the warm pedagogy of this special teacher and artist, who is herself a writer of hit songs, a gifted story teller, and a kind human.
-
