Primo diPietroEs ist großartig!I’m sixteen episodes in, and I really love this podcast. There’s a lot that makes it special, from the way in which the hosts’ understanding, love, and appreciation for the genre deepen with each episode, to their willingness to experiment with the form and scope of the discussions, to the genuine affection that Brad and Carla have for each other. It’s about the music, sure, but it’s as much about the things that sustain us in friendship over distance and time--I’m grateful for the chance to listen and learn with them.

JeffersonDDGreat introduction to Krautrock!!Carla and Brad make this genre very interesting. Pro-tip: enjoy the album first before they discuss it!

awkPrødKrautrockThe hosts know their stuff albeit the more mainstream artists. A little to much giggliness and asides for me but I enjoyed some parts. They really need to explore mid-70s Tangerine Dream (Rubycon, Ricochet, Cyclone. They are really missing out.)

Old Man VoorheesMy new favorite! This has become one of my favorite podcasts ever! Carla and Brad are informative and their subjects well researched, yet they retain the lighthearted atmosphere of a couple pals at the bar nerding out over their favorite music. I’ve been a krautrock fan for years (decades?) and continue to be amazed at their album selection. Choosing to focus on NEU!2 (my first krautrock album purchase in the 90s) over NEU! or NEU!75 or Harmonia’s “Deluxe” over the fan favorite debut really speaks to my personal preferences. I’m leaning quite a lot for a guy who considers himself pretty knowledgeable on the genre. The recent episode on Brainticket was a mind melting revelation! Now, if I could just figure out the right jazz track to topple Brad’s “I don’t like jazz” wall, I would consider it a life achievement (cough cough, Door to the Cosmos, cough, Sun Ra)… Carla, Brad, please keep it up, you’re doing great!

CBK! RocksGreat show!I got into the genre not long before this podcast started airing, and I enjoy this program because the hosts don’t pretend or claim to be experts - they’re just big fans like anyone else! They’re exploring and learning about these bands and records as they go, to some degree, and it’s refreshing. Lighthearted and informative, I look forward to each episode’s release.

Amon Düül IIIIs it prog? Many of the albums reviewed here by Carla and Brad are ones that I’ve loved for many years now, but I’m enjoying hearing the hosts’ fresh perspectives and following their process of discovery. The research and context they provide for each album is great, and it definitely enriches each episode. For example, I especially enjoyed hearing about Kluster’s time at the Zodiak Free Arts Lab before losing Conrad and donning a C. A note to the hosts: Embrace the prog! I’ve been quite amused by the closing segment of each episode in which Carla and Brad debate whether the krautrock album they’ve been listening to is prog. I find it so amusing because I definitely experienced this conundrum while first discovering bands like Faust, Amon Düül II, and Can. My eventual conclusion: It IS prog! In the sense that it’s truly progressive music that breaks from the conventions of commercial rock. In my mind, embracing this definition of prog enriches it’s overall meaning beyond the pompous schlock that is ELP, Jethro Tull, et al. I’m no longer afraid to admit publicly that I like prog, and I’m curious to see if Carla and Brad eventually will, too! ;-)

DocBenway78Their enthusiasm is infectious! This is a really fun podcast hosted by a couple of music nut friends whose chemistry and enthusiasm really carry the show. Doesn’t hurt that they’ve chosen a musical genre - krautrock - that is chronically underserved in the podcast space. If I were to offer some constructive criticism it would be that I’d love to see them do a deeper dive in regards to each bands history, a la NO DOGS IN SPACE (which has a similar format but with a focus on punk / post-punk) rather than the current approach which plays up their ‘enthusiastic newbie’ vibe. The most recent episode, where they interviewed a krautrock-influenced musician for a deep dive into the world of analogue synths was a lot of fun and a definite highlight. Would love to see this show grow into the krautrock-behemoth I know it could be, and am excited to see how it develops.

Jefro Breis BreisTanzt mit den SternenThis is a very good program by a couple of pals. It’s only two episodes in, but it already has shown that they listen a lot and do their research on the music. Keep on going! There’s a lot more German music to talk about. I cannot wait to hear what they think about Kluster (with a ‘K’). Danke!
