Murder in Illinois

2,211

In 2007, Chris Vaughn was arrested during a funeral for his wife and three children. He would be tried and convicted of their murders. To this day he maintains no memory of what occurred that tragic day 20 years ago. Murder in Illinois follows the complicated circumstances that led to Vaughn’s conviction, as well as the forensic evidence his supporters believe proves his innocence- in attempt to answer one question: Who killed the Vaughn family?

    Terrible
Easily the worst true crime podcast I’ve ever listened to. There is no objectivity in this story at all; therefore, I couldn’t get further than E3. From what I’ve read on Reddit and others, the entire series is the same. Shame on this host for allowing her guests (the murders’ family) to shame and blame the victim and her family. This is nothing more than a character assassination of the victim. Disgusting 🤢

This is an amazing podcast that I highly recommend.

Wondering if the Negative reviews Even Listened to the Poscast
Most of the complaints I see in the negative reviews are feelings-based complaints and complaints about the side of Kimberly’s family, or the “Christopher is guilty” side, not being represented well enough. We are meant to draw a verdict based on unobstructed evidence, and a guilty verdict should be made when guilt is beyond all reasonable doubt. Even though the podcaster is only unfortunately able to obtain the personal experience of Chris’s family and not Kimberly’s, what Lauren manages to do that is far more important than capturing any of the feelings and opinions of any family members is bring physical evidence to light that was withheld from the people choosing Chris’s fate and withheld from the public. This is evidence that, having been shown, you would be hard pressed to find a full jury ruling guilty beyond all reasonable doubt. As a matter of fact, the physical evidence shows it was nearly impossible, if not entirely impossible, for Chris to have physically committed the crime. Yes, there are emotional pieces that might make us find Chris very unfavorable or prevent us from being able to believe a mother could be responsible for what happened to this family. But at the end of the day facts don’t care about feelings. Whether you feel Chris is guilty, or feel Chris is innocent, the physical evidence shows the angle of the gunshots were incompatible with Chris being able to perform them, the blood evidence was incompatible with Chris having committed the murders - the real evidence shows us what likely happened and what could not have happened that day. What people get hung up on, Chris’s family and viewpoint seemingly being “prioritized”, is actually what those who are dissatisfied are doing themselves: prioritizing the family experiences and personal feelings about Chris over the recovered crucial physical evidence provided through this podcast. The evidence is compelling enough to see a fair trial was not received.

    Unbelievable Bias
I came back to this podcast from a Facebook post and forgot how bad this was. I live in the Chicago suburbs and remember watching the live coverage on the news the morning this happened. I have always agreed with the guilty verdict. The amount of twisting this podcaster does to try to say he didn’t is amazing. And his family trashing Kimberly and her family is just gross. Listen to his family and you will totally understand how he is guilty. The podcaster should be ashamed for releasing this trash.

    Disappointed
I really enjoyed the Songbird Road podcast which is why I listened to this one, but unfortunately, this one seems very one-sided. I understand that the victim's family chose not to participate but I feel there could have been more of an effort to present a more balanced approach.

    Irresponsible Journalism
This is the most biased, irresponsibly reported podcast I have ever listened to. I understand that Kim’s family didn’t want to participate, but the podcasters still have a duty to present a story that at least attempts to illustrate an unbiased holistic view of her. What a shameful, lazy way of handling an absolutely horrific tragedy. I had never heard of this case prior to listening, so am approaching this with no opinions on anyone’s guilt or innocence. However I can imagine a piece of garbage like this can only negatively impact truth or justice.

    So biased
Relating to season two. The first 3 episodes are basically the accused’s family talking about how wonder he is and how horrible his wife (the victim) and her family are. They seem to have an inferiority complex about the victim and her family, and show no empathy for the 4 deceased family members, 3 of which were children. This is extremely biased, one-sided and not factual at all. Stopped listening.

    This one is bad
You can sum up this entire podcast with: his family doesn’t think Chris could kill his family because he plays with his kids, and what if Kim was an undiagnosed bipolar?! I love the others in this series, but the Vaughn episodes are garbage. Trash. No evidence is presented. No real alternative theories are provided. Just, “idk guys, his mom said he didn’t do it, and she never liked that kim girl!”

    Season 2 is awful
This is one of the most biased and opinionated podcasts I’ve listened to. It is only the convicted man, Christopher Vaughn, and his family telling their side of the story and the host takes it as fact. One of the highlights for me was when the host interviewed a stripper to get her view on the case. Absolutely ridiculous!

Diehard TC fan love this series
Can’t believe I never heard of these before especially with all the true crime I have listened to. Very good investigation. Listen you will be hooked.

Again, a podcaster who is better than a seasoned detective
The comments by MLBR2002, michelleAF, Teon77, AnnoyedInIndiana: I would bet they all have either heinous skeletons in their closets & thirst for innocent people to be convicted so they don’t have to look at themselves or they have family members who are corrupt cops, lawyers, judges and the like. This podcaster is incredibly professional & sensitive, always giving the killer & her family the benefit of the doubt. The only person in this podcast I felt cheapened it was that so-called reporter Erica Wurst. I say so-called because nothing that came from her mouth was objective. Many statements started with “Well I would never if…,” calling the kids “babies” when they were in fact not babies. She was very unprofessional & took the integrity of this podcast down just half a notch. She sounded like the homeless meth heads that tv crews love to interview to their “take” on things. But kudos to this podcaster, well done. I would say that is an innocent man sitting in prison.
  • Being100000
    Clearly Guilty
Entertaining series but he didn’t seem not guilty for 1 second.

    This podcast is disgusting
I listened to this season after listening to Murder On Songbird Road. The woman in that podcast is obviously guilty. Lauren has a weird way of “reporting”. And after this season… it’s very obvious that she chooses subjects who are clearly guilty and then does a weird job of trying to make it appear that they are innocent by submitting a bunch of baseless facts. This season about Chris Vaughn is just letting his family bash Kim and her family every episode. This is just gossip and tabloid fodder. I wish Kim’s family would sue Lauren and Chris’s parents. His parents are insufferable. Maybe that’s why Kim and her family kept their distance. I truly don’t understand the point of this podcast other than Lauren to have somewhere to pretend to be a journalist and listen to herself talk. Yikes. She should be ashamed of herself.
  • Ljbrown3
    Stick to the facts
I think this podcast would have been alot more effective if they stuck to facts and evidence and left out the trash talking about the family. Criticizing what food the in laws prepared or that they didn’t chop and prep the food before a dinner party? What on earth does that have to do with the murders. Leave it out.

    Great Unbiased Reporting
Thank you for the work you do with the open unbiased minds please! Your investigative journalism is amazing and you truly are an inspiration! You stand up and speak out against the wrongs while these sheep try to hide the truth or are too blind to understand it. Great job
  • Fishin-N-motorboatin’24
    Ugh, cops!!!
By the third episode, I already wanted to punch those cops in the face for the way they handled that investigation!
  • That’s SO Susie
    Host did a fantastic job
I’m still not sure about Chris’ innocence but I thought the host did a great job of telling the story. Love her voice and her ability to tell the story.
  • MLBR2002
    No
This is a pathetically one sided viewpoint of a tragic story of a man who murdered his wife and kids so he could live the life he wanted to live, which didn't include them. Listening to the parents of the murderer talk about their son was cringe worthy. While the man who murdered his family is described in this podcast as basically the perfect everything, the murdered wife is painted (and literally called) a monster along with her own family. So sad this podcast chose to victim shame and blame, and how cowardly when the woman cannot defend herself. The parents of the killer need to pull their heads out of the sand and accept reality. Only then will they be able to move on from this. And I agree with the other reviewer, the music is just horrible.
  • soccersweety186
    S2 seems intensely biased
I started listening to season two of this podcast with zero preconceived notions. This wasn’t a case that I knew about ahead of time. I am on episode seven and can say that almost 0 facts have been reported up to this point. So far it has just been a lot of one-sided reporting from Chris Vaughn’s parents. Some things were told with little corroboration from anyone but Kim Vaughn’s in-laws. The comments about “monster mommy” seemed in very poor taste. It is honestly a disservice to Chris Vaughn because if the reporter eventually does get to any real facts about a wrongful conviction, it’s just hard to even trust her at this point.
  • michelleAF
    S2 is a joke
S2 is one of the worst true crime pods I’ve ever heard. Don’t bother.
  • BobbyJams
    Listen with an open mind
How can you not listen to all the evidence and still think this is 100% biased? The mother snapped. Cops do not always know what happened. Parents are of course going to be biased on both sides. Listen with an open mind.
  • Ruca3186
    Eye opening
Season 2 the case on Christopher Vaughn deserves a retrial out of the county he has been originally tried. Yes this is strongly narrated from the side of Christopher Vaughns family but it seems they need to be heard because the court system didn’t give them a voice. When will people start listening to the facts and science and stop with the emotional judgement. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have to witness what he endured. I believe Christopher is innocent and deserves a fair trial. I hope he will have his day.

    Fantastic and Inspiring
The wrongful convictions that plague this country’s judicial system have always had a dramatic impact on me. This case has truly shined the spotlight on the corruption and selfish interests across countless legal entities in the USA. I sincerely hope that Chris meets freedom once again soon. I’m thankful that this podcast gave him his voice for the first time since the tragedy in a way that no one else could.

Season 2 is Worth a Listen
Ia this one-sided. Yes. Does it bring up a lot of issues. Yes. I think it episode 11 makes a lot of good points of how the prosecution failed at proving a theory that was not possible. Yet the 1 star reviews are confusing bc these points mentioned have merit. Either way at this was worth listening to and forming your own opinion
  • Mrbsings
The most unprofessional podcast I have ever heard
This is a tabloid podcast with no attempt to even appear as a journalist with integrity. The person who made this should be ashamed of themselves.

    Chris Watts Family 2.0
This family is disgusting and I am praying for Kimberly’s family as this causes trauma all over again. Chris doesn’t even defend himself. His family is disgusting and the reason he’s this covert narcissist. Her family was upset about college degrees? How sick is his family for STILL gossiping about a wife their son murdered. Absolutely gross!

    First time listener
I’m enjoying the story. I plan to go back and listen to season 1 then to #3 The story is intriguing. Vaughn’s mother should be ashamed of herself for disparaging her DIL. Pretty obvious that she was a big part of the problem. I felt like the narrator was bias from the beginning. There were definitely problems with the police investigation but he did lie to the police so how could they believe him? The music is the worst ! Seriously had to skip over the lady singing/wailing parts.
  • Ta2dMnky
Telling a story or just making one up?
This is specifically regarding season 2 Firstly I found the parents have permanent roses-colored glasses, representing their sons’ childhood like a missing chapter from Tom Sawyer. Here’s a tip, running with the fishing pole isn’t “innovative” it’s taking an easy action and making it absurdly more complex, just like getting a divorce is easier than committing a triple murder. I expected the parents to be bias, however the storyteller bought into the ridiculous story, probably in the hopes of making the story better. Halfway thru, the man who “would never incriminate his wife” does nothing BUT point the finger at her!! Up to that point, I’d believed he may have been innocent, but the deviate of that letter is someone who thinks they’re smart enough to manipulate everyone and made me certain of his guilt. I didn’t like how easily the narrator couldn’t remain bias but instead drank the family kool-aid for the sake of ratings. Lastly, the theme music was Not to my liking, that’s the nicest thing I can say about that.
  • cmastronaru
    Wow
I think the low star reviews might be the family who wasn’t willing to speak with you. I think you didn’t just raise reasonable doubt, you proved his innocence. Chris is a victim, not a criminal. I hope that his new pro bono lawyers are able to get him released.
  • BoogieBaby0507
    Ironically Biased
Never have I ever listened to a show or podcast where someone sets out to show someone has been wrongfully convicted and not agreed with the journalist. Bc it seems usually people do fair unbiased reporting. NOT here! They call blood splatter junk science but rely on the 1 thing and that 1 thing only to prove this guy didn’t slaughter his entire family. This is the story of a privileged white man who murdered his family and a so called journalist who is utterly blinded by mountains of evidence to prove her own theory. I listened all the way through and what a waste of time. Don’t bother if you genuinely care about wrongfully convicted people this ain’t it. Gross.
  • actualgremlin
    Well…
Listen if you’d like to hear Lauren Bright Pacheco and a murderer’s family losing all credibility for a whole season.
  • crazycatkatie
    Bias
Chris’ family is misogynistic and it is evident they resent educated people and they put her down at every turn. “Kim couldn’t cook, Kim was sedentary, insinuating Kim trapped” Chris. Insinuating Kim had loose morals by getting pregnant. They do not seem to have a very objective view of their own kid. Chris’ parents don’t seem to be broken up that their grandkids are dead and more intent on villainizing Kim and her family. The music is horrific and I couldn’t make it past episode 3.

    Victim Blaming At Its Worst
I’m halfway through this series and I’m still waiting for any evidence that Chris Vaughn was wrongly convicted. His parents are miserable people and had way too much influence on this podcast. Just awful.

    Must listen til the end!!
So the recent 1 ⭐️ reviews this podcast received, honestly at the beginning, I felt the same way!! I had never heard of this case, but from the beginning ‘I knew he was guilty’. I wondered how they could be saying some of the things they were saying. I stuck with it though and completed the season and O.M.G! I cried like a baby. He didn’t do it! Not only did he have to watch his whole family die in front of him, he then has had to set in prison since!! Can you imagine??!!! Then I came to learn maybe that’s how they were able to say and feel how they did! The Podcast is very well researched and put together!! One of the best I’ve listened to, if not the best (and I listen to a lot)!
  • izadorablue
Let’s blame the educated victim and her family
Horrible victim blaming. The killer’s family blames the murders wife and her family for their death. The killers family loves to hunt and kill but there is no way their “loving son” could kill his family. The killers family’s educational insecurity was very revealing. They clearly hated the killed wife. What is wrong with this pod caster. The murdered wife is a “monster mom.” What on earth is this podcast doing? The podcaster indicates that the eyes of the murder made her think that the killer was innocent bc his eyes were confused. But is that really what his eyes indicate? I say look closer. To me he reflects a feeling of closed down and insecure with some serious pain in his past maybe from his upbringing. That would seem to track more based on the way his family blame shifts and denies with narcissistic tendencies. Do you think that may have created a rage killer? Huh just a thought.

    Heartbreaking
Just a heartbreaking story. Great journalistic work that lets you make your own conclusion about what happened. I believe Chris is innocent and these children were murdered by their mother who was taking some very powerful meds at the time. No one wins in this story, but Chris is certainly wrongly convicted.

    Listened twice
I have listened to this podcast twice. I have recommended to friends. I at first thought, Wow he did it… and then the story developed and my mind was changed. Having a medical background if you haven’t had/witnessed an adverse reaction to a medication then you have no idea how crazy it can get.

    Excellent
This podcast is amazing and shows how corrupt our judicial system truly is. I love how it brings the truth to light and I hope he gets the justice he deserves because after listening you can’t help but know he didn’t do it.

    So informative!
This case in the media was so one sided, so glad to have both sides, and the science behind it, to show what really happened to this family 💔

Interesting story but his parents are so very unlikeable that I have no interest in continuing

    Very good.
I drive a lot for work. I’ve listened to around 50 of these types of podcasts as it’s my favorite genre. I can honestly say I am pretty savvy in the quality of these murder mystery style podcasts. This particular story is heartbreaking and you can tell by the negative comments here that sides are picked almost immediately just like Chris was judged and sentenced before even going to trial. I get it. What I don’t understand is how you can leave a negative comment with a low rating. Lauren Pacheco does a phenomenal job hosting. She speaks very well, her research is on point, her interviews are intriguing and she obviously cares about her work. She makes several references/disclaimers about Kimberlys family’s unwillingness to participate and makes it clear that the info provided is from one side. Great work Lauren. Already looking into your other podcasts:)
  • LadyCris
    Interesting story but…
So heavily one sided. It turns into a bashing of Kimberly and her family. It loses credibility as a fair representation of Chris or Kimberly, their marriage. Disappointed.
  • TJ1417
    Frustrating
It kept me intrigued, but also soooo frustrated. There was so much left out. You can’t tell me that no one questioned that he listened to all the evidence and THEN created a story to account for it years later? And she started this based on his eyes in the mugshot? Am I seeing the same photo? There has been no point in this podcast that I have questioned his innocence.
  • Ted Bendy
    Wow
Wow, first off I stumbled on the show on Spotify, which from what I can tell has no way to review… or see reviews or rating, super annoying. Anyway Episode one definitely caught my eye and I jumped on apple without seeing the ratings/reading the reviews. They’re all true. Episode 2 is god awful. I will not continue. I’m not sure if it’s editing.. I mean, I am actually, this podcast shouldn’t exist. The family victim blaming is just disgusting and gross. The vayn family goes on and on about how awesome their son is and how terrible Kimberly's family is. At one point either the mom or dad actually refers to their son as “a knight in shinning armor” for sticking around and marrying kimberly for getting HER pregnant. I mean what the f. They go on and on about how kimberly’s family looks down on the vayns for not attending college, but also say that Chris needs to break up with Kimberly so he can attend……college. They basically blame Kimberly for anything Chris does wrong. The whole thing is just out of control. I cannot believe someone actually produced then released this garbage. I had to stop listening due to anger and just literally feeling sick to my stomach… kudos to people who made it through the whole series, you’re gross to.
  • Concerned humanitarian
    No journalistic integrity shown
Despite court records, evidence to the contrary, and extensive testimony this podcast attempts to sully the victims in death. Disgusting use of a platform. You could truly take the script from “True Story; 2015”…or several other similar movies to tell where this sociopath dreamed up his new defense. Don’t believe his new legal tactics.
