Ray NajjarRay NajjarI have been devouring these podcasts since I learned of them about a month ago. I’ve been going through the archives, starting with some of the older scientists, particularly those that have worked in oceanography, which is my own field. It’s fascinating to hear about what the key questions were in oceanography and climate science decades ago. It’s also fascinating to hear about the trajectories of individual scientists, many of them stumbling into climate science accidentally. The conversations can get kind of technical from time to time but there is always plenty of conversation that is non-technical and often about the social responsibility of climate scientists, which is something that Adam Sobel himself struggles with, as do I. In a nutshell, the podcast is a must for climate scientists and those in related fields, but will also be of interest to a more general audience. One episode in particular that will be of general interest will be the one with Naomi Oreskes, the great historian of science. She is brilliant and absolutely shines in this interview and dispatches a lot of wisdom in a short amount of time.

Pixel89Excellent interviewsAn interesting set of interviews that beautifully present the broad diversity of pathways into science, lives, and thought patterns of climate scientist. The curation of people to interview is extremely thoughtful.

PlantspersonFun, in-depth conversationsInteresting scientists, real conversations about key moments in their careers, some “aha” moments about climate and how science works.

T to the tizzyOral history of scientistsWhile the overt audience would appear to be professional academic scientists primarily in the area of Earth, atmospheric, and climate science; it can be of interest to a general audience of curious minds. Furthermore, the interviews serve as an oral history of the field and the people who participate in it. Not only does the discussion touch on the formal field of study, but also puts it into historical and personal perspective for each of the interviewees.

Nancy VitameatavegaminEavesdrop on great climate scientists talkingThis is a really terrific podcast that offers something unique, chance to listen in on wide-ranging conversations between scientists—climate scientists in particular. Adam Sobel is a great listener and a skillful interviewer who selves into his subjects influences and passions. We may hear as much about opera, jazz or politics as about ENSO prediction and how drought affects migration. But this is clearly a podcast for people who like to geek out on the science and while much will be incomprehensible to the non-scientist you still get a valuable sense as to how scientists think and work. Give it a listen!

SmashHit-o-holicExcellent discussion & a suggestionGreat discussion...occurs to me that ecologists tend to have more a the sense of the sacredness of landscape and often work with indigenous groups to protect biodiversity & landscape but are rarely brought into discussion with climate scientists... the species extinction crisis is related to climate but also has its own dynamics & the voices of ecologists seems weaker than that of climate scientists. Would love to see you chat with some ecologists on this podcast!
