As a Taylor Swift fan obsessed with Mormon history, I feel like this podcast was made for me :) Binged every episode over the last three weeks. Love the research you’ve done and the jokes included. I was on a run when you said to stop what you’re doing and Google a pic of Hosea Stout. I was laughing out loud at the squirrel strangler himself.

    Come for the crass,
stay for the sarcasm. Don’t sleep on the music/sound design. Enjoy learning the history you were never taught before.

    Amazingly informative podcast.
Thank you so much for all the research and effort you both put into these podcasts.

    Lindsay & Bryan are delightful!
I think I started listening 3 weeks ago and I have loved every minute, silly jokes and all! I appreciate how fun you have made Mormon History! You have a loyal fan!
  • Muzilove
    Accidentally binged it all
In the last month (6/24) I listened to all 125 episodes. I don’t even know how I managed to do that. There was a lot of pearl clutching on my part. But wow!

Mormon or not, this is fascinating!!
I am mesmerized by this podcast. Who would have thought Mormonism could be so interesting! Lindsay and Brian make these stories so fun and have obviously done the research to make the content reliable.

Quality, true and honest historical research
With a big side of humor. I love these two. To have Mormon History be as interesting as Bryan and Lindsey make it is unique. Their banter plays off each other so well and you will always come away entertained and more knowledgeable.

Straightforward history, told with a sense of humor!
I love this podcast. The hosts have clearly done their research and are transparent about their source material. They share book recommendations at the end of every episode for listeners who want to take a deeper dive. I love the humor they bring to narrating events that are often quite troubling - it’s great way to help the medicine go down. And the music is amazing! Thanks for all your work, Bryan and Lindsay!!

    Love it!
You are not getting Sunday school history here. The history is what it is, and it is endlessly entertaining! Brian and Lindsey(both spelled wrong?) are awesome! I love the approach of not learning church history to prove or disprove the truth claims of the church. The history itself is just interesting, infuriating, inspiring for what it is.
  • Natalie.Ca
    Love it!
This is my favorite podcast right now. I am almost as obsessed with the history as Bryan and Lindsay. It is so Impeccably researched. They have other experts and historians on who also love the show. And if you aren’t getting the jokes, you’re missing out! The humor is freaking awesome!

    Wickedly funny
I truly enjoy this podcast as it has helped me understand aspects of Mormonism that are not taught within the church. I love hearing stories of our very human predecessors. This podcast brings church history to life and has helped me reconcile some hurt and shame that was associated with membership. I can only imagine how it helps those processing the repressed feelings created within this faith. Thank you!

    Sorta good
I'd love to leave a better review because I LOVE diving into Mormon history. I am really burned out from the cheesy jokes and "period" music. It's not necessary, if there were an alternative, I'd listen. Frankly, Naked Mormonism isn't better due to the host's rants. Can't win.
  • BitterrootRiver
    Delightful and Informative
They cover complicated, sensitive and interesting topics in Mormonism with honor and extraordinary knowledge. I feel so much more connected to my Mormon ancestors then I have ever before.

    Excellent history!
It continues to be such a pleasure to learn unfiltered Mormon history from LHP and BB! Thank you for your thorough research and excellent writing!

Informative, Balanced, and Boring (in a good way)
What I mean by boring, I mean it’s not “gotcha” history or commentary. It’s not angry all the time. I got sick of the podcasts that tend to have a combative tone. It just gets old. I like how Brian and Lindsay follow their script and keep it level headed. They tell it how it is, and I find that refreshing. Even better when they state how we just don’t know, there isn’t enough documentation, proof, etc. And that’s ok. So thank you for digging through our collective past and doing a great job showing us the good, bad, and ugly (mostly bad and ugly in my opinion) of Mormon History. Thank you.

    Fabulous, Educational, Eye-Opening
I binged the entire catalog of episodes over the course of a couple of months. Thank you for producing this podcast - it has helped me and many others so immensely.

    Love this!
This has been so helpful in my faith journey and unpacking my own family history! You guys are doing amazing!!

Lindsay...you ain’t no Brigamite. seems a bit blurry, disconnected
You two really get the crazy time of The Succession. Strang and his gang is so em awesome. Let’s go!!! Next ...Lyman White and the Whitites. Love you both!!! So...where are you?? Post Sunstone and John Whitmer and not a peep!!! Come on. You have to keep going. We all live you and rely on you!!!! Amazing stuff. I love the humor and the history. Historical and. Hysterical. 😜 Just awesome!!! Succession breakdown is a breakdown. Screw Brigham Young. He was responsible for so many deaths of innocent human beings. He’s a stinky, rapist, and you think he’s better than Sidney Rigdon? I really love what you do. But you both know that Brigham Young is a narcissistic, deluded, wacko. They could have chosen Emma!!!!! And they should have ♥️♥️♥️♥️

    Lindsey and Bryan are amazing!
I have listened to Lindsey since Year of Polygamy. Some of my favorite episodes there were with Bryan. When I found this podcast, I was soooo excited! Y’all are amazing together. I have learned so much. I am now caught up and waiting for the next episode. I love it! Thank you for all the work you do to bring Mormon history to light. You also make it feel alive which is so fun.
  • Andy.n.Lisa
    Excellent podcast!
I really love Mormon history. It’s SO much more fascinating than the whitewashed, perky versions we got in church. They give us the real stuff that is gritty, and messy, so much more engaging. The dynamic between Lindsay and Bryan is so much fun which provides some levity and humor to what could be some kind of dry facts. They really bring this stuff to life and make these historical figures more real and multi-dimensional. Really fine work, guys!

    Review (duh)
Not only is this the best Mormon history podcast, but it’s probably the best of any podcast. Lindsay and Brian, who come of as wonderfully kind and intelligent people, dish out well researched content, as well as some great humor and thoughtful commentary. Both Mormons and non Mormons will benefit have their perspectives pleasantly challenged by the academic honesty presented in this podcast.

Well researched. Strikes the perfect balance between information and banter. Respectful without being reverential. Kudos Lindsay & Bryan.

    Lack of communication perhaps
I just finished listening to episode three from 2019. It was very interesting that when one host was talking about Sophronia and her husband Calvin she pointed out that he got tuberculosis and died shortly thereafter. It’s interesting because the host that was speaking about Calvin previous to her, Said that he died of unknown reasons. He also speculated that perhaps it was because he was hit in the head so many times by Joseph. It just seems like each person who is hosting this program would double check their facts.
  • Ar1zonaSunshine
Well researched and an absolute delight!
If you grew up with the sweeten condensed version of Joseph Smith, the evidence-based version discussed in this podcast will be absolutely exhilarating!
  • GobBluthOfTheAlliance
    Love the podcast!
Love the podcast! Just wish they would go back to where they left off in the succession crisis and stop with the tv show commentaries.
  • Mikey-west
    Entertaining AND Informative
One of my favorite podcasts. I love Lindsay’s and Bryan’s research and wit as they go through the history of my former faith. They are very respectful of the history as well as their audience.

    Incredible a life changer
I just discovered this podcast and cannot get enough. I am an active nuanced Mormon and feel like this podcast and the knowledge shared is a breath of fresh air. I did not love the Romney Jab in the second polygamy episode. I am Not the biggest Romney fan but I think taking a shot at him took me out of the podcast and lessened the experience of diving into the history. Overall I cannot get enough. Huge Brian and Lindsay fan!

    Well done, entertaining, good info
Here is my humble opinion on this podcast: I was born a church member, but do not believe the church to be true. (Ex-mormon I guess you could say.) I gave the podcast 5 stars because it is apparent that a lot of work goes into it and it is overall very enjoyable to listen to and contains good information. I do think it could be improved in one very specific way. The hosts (especially Lindsay) consistently moralize about people’s actions, which gives the podcast less legitimacy from a historical point of view. Sarcastic comments that allude to what terrible people certain historical figures are, how awful and archaic the culture of the time was, how dumb peoples beliefs were, how terrible their actions were etc. makes the presented information (which is overall rather good) less credible and invites the listener to be skeptical of whatever information is being presented. I also think it makes LDS listeners double down on their positions, and does the same for anti-LDS people, which is a less than ideal outcome for a history podcast about such a divisive topic. I do not think that it is up to the hosts to formulate moral conclusions from the information provided (even if the moral conclusions are widely accepted today.) This is of course, in my opinion. If the hosts wish to be biased and proud of it, that is fine and dandy, I just prefer an unbiased historical approach and believe it makes for a superior delivery of historical information. Thank you for putting so much effort into the podcast. I enjoy listening very much and hope you continue doing it far into the future. Respectfully, Joe PS. Brigham Young did have game, as well as a devilishly handsome smolder. 😏 PPS. More Carter Family songs for the music! Fits the feel very nicely.

Love the podcast, would like a deeper dive into historicity of BOM
The episodes have been really interesting so far. But I would love for someone to look at the Book of Mormon from a historical Biblical scholarship perspective and not just “there were translation errors from the KJB version of Isaiah in the BOM.” The vast majority of Christians (and basically no Mormons) know enough about biblical history to understand that most of the Bible was never meant to be historical (unlike the Book of Mormon, which claims to be and clearly isn’t). I favor the thesis propounded by Michael Douglas Goulder and John Shelby Spong that the NT was written as liturgical texts for synagogue (the work of JD Crossan and the Jesus Seminar are also helpful), and most Jesus stories were parabolic in nature and interpreted literally only much later when most of the church was gentile rather than Jewish. This has very big implications for the Book of Mormon! First of all, Mary’s virginity was an invention much later on that was meant to make a symbolic, theological claim (same with all the nativity stories- early Christian listeners to the texts knew these events had not happened). Interpreting the Isaiah text as referring to Jesus is universally dismissed by historians, and certainly no one interpreted it that way until Matthew made a very tenuous case for such an interpretation. There’s no way that Lehi or Nephi would know so much about Jesus before he was born, when these stories were invented decades after his death! And the Sermon on the Mount was an invention of Matthew who was making the case that Jesus was a new Moses on a new mount with a new interpretation of the Torah. The beatitudes (in some form) are likely original to Jesus, but most of the rest was added later (no one was following Jesus around to record everything he said on a scroll!). So the BOM inherently assumes a completed NT and a Jesus who did and said exactly what was written in those books. Once you know the history of Biblical texts, a historical interpretation of the Book of Mormon becomes absurd, not just one rational argument among others. Unfortunately very few Mormon scholars have delved deeply into the creation of biblical texts. And many Christian scholars alike are loathe to accept that a strictly historical interpretation of the Bible is not tenable, and was never the intention of Biblical authors. I think this perspective is sorely lacking in Book of Mormon scholarship.

Good info, less commentary and banter
I like the info, really interesting, but I could do without the banter and commentary.

    Love this podcast
These two have opened my eyes to how fascinating Mormon history can be! Love their thorough and entertaining style. Thank you both so much for this podcast!

    Love Lyndsay and Bryan's approach
Such a well researched and presented podcast. I can't wait for each new episode. Bryan's humor rivals RFM's but he goes about it 'in his humble way...humble way now....humble way...HUMBLE WAY." And Bryan would likely get that when 95% of listeners may not. I also love the Books of Mormon report. Keep it up!

Amazing podcast with the best hosts
I laugh. I cry. I love this podcast. Great hosts who show their quirky personalities that fit perfectly with the history they present. Just finished the State of the Podcast. Its been great to reflect on the huge achievement of Lindsay and Brian the past few years. The quality has been among the best (and that comes from someone who listens to an average of 6 hours of podcasts each day (double speed ;-))). I am so excited for another season!
  • Bergy07
Love this but boy the sarcasm to info ratio is getting out of hand
You two are so awesome! Literally love the podcast. The fun, snarky, funny comments while still staying “neutral” and providing broad information is key to my 5 star rating. The historical information is first rate and your sarcasm and snarky comments at times make it fun (“Boggs boo hiss” “Mormons read the room”). I’m not sure if something is happening in your lives but in recent episodes it really feels like it has become more overtly antagonistic. Comments or asides virtually every other sentence that basically say “boy was XYZ stupid and by implication you or anyone who believes similarly is stupid.” Just dial the ratio back just a little. Just a little. Maybe every third sentence. :)

    YouTube uploads?
Are you going to upload your episodes to YouTube. Even if it’s just audio it would be nice to have these great episodes on the same platform along with the other great presentations.

Fabulously Fun Way to Learn History
I have been going down the rabbit hole on lMormon History. Love how this podcast sticks to the history and isn’t airing out opinions. It’s also upbeat and fun. It’s one of our favorites to listen to on road trips.
  • Shawn Hallz
    So Good!
I’ve binged half of the podcast over the past two weeks and have learned so much. Bryan and Lindsay share lesser known fascinating stories and perspectives of Mormon history and have great recommendations for further reading.
  • wndifirnens
Uncommon history - like, sanctimonious rhetoric -strike
I enjoy the uncommon historical facts and most of the historical opinions presented. There are many ways to provide an opinion without a self righteous bent. Example; the concept of Constitutional rights is A part of LDS doctrine, instead of comparing the call to arms to retrieve property and hold the mobs accountable as a “whaaaa” ?? , moment , perhaps research for context as to why the juxtaposition in the early saint leadership mindset based on scriptural references and revelatory teaching? Was there even a conflict on a US Constitutional basis? You might be surprised.

    Fantastic history presentation!

    Overlooked History
Some jokes I get, some I don’t. Overall though I appreciate the personalities, the humor, the structure and topics of this podcast more than any others even somewhat like it. Lindsey has put so much into her Mormon history experience producing and hosting YOP and this newer project has proven itself to be another treasure trove of often forgotten or purposely neglected Mormon history. Her equal side man BB is also top notch and obviously a disciple of historical truth and a radical nerd of tangible relics of the past. I relate with these two in many ways and look forward to all new episodes. 43 in and counting! Additional guests on various episodes add additional depth that competes what I feel is the best Mormon history podcast I have heard to date. Stay the course and party hard!
  • Veli Kirkko
    Not Objective
I was just looking for an LDS history podcast. I like the actual content but the snarky comments and liberal/derogatory use of the word “Mormon” tell me there’s a definite anti-LDS agenda associated with this podcast and the Sunstone organization in general.
  • Aubrey Chaves
    My favorite history podcast!
I can’t get enough of this podcast. It’s the perfect balance of breadth and depth so it’s been such a great jumping off point topics I’ve wanted to read more about on my own.

    Well done!
A thoughtful and interesting approach to the history of the church. Definitely one of the best Mormon themed podcasts out there.

    Keep your politics out!
Did you not know that you have trump supporters who listen to you? Why did you make that comment? Because you did I probably won’t listen again and definitly won’t fianacially support you!

    Outstanding!
What a wonderful podcast! The history and the way it is told is poignant, substantive, and interesting. I commend the hosts of the podcast. I only wish I could ha e found it sooner to lend my support. Thank you so much!!!
