The Theology Pugcast

353

The Theology Pugcast is three over-educated Reformed guys grumbling about what bugs them, and sometimes even barking about what they like. The show usually is recorded in a pub--that's why there is some background noise on occasion. The topics can vary widely seeing as the Pugsters have different spheres of knowledge and interest, but common themes which appear regularly include the transcendence of God and the meaningfulness of His creation.

    “You know”
Gentlemen, you have some great things to say, but I find your constant use of “you know” to be very distracting. Is it possible for that to be edited out before it’s posted online? Thank you for the great work you are doing.

    Wonderful show
There are a lot of podcasts that help me to love God with all my mind, but if one exists that does that better than this show, I have not found it.

Listen to the women! Adapt or make yourselves (and patriarchal religions) obsolete.
I just listened to your 4/29/24 podcast about the 4B movement in Korea, where women are expressing their dissatisfaction with the roles they have been handed by opting out of relationships with men, marriage and children. Not once, in talking about this issue, did these three old white men mention women’s DOUBLE WORKLOAD (since few families can get by with just one wage earner), or how MEN COULD MAYBE HELP WOMEN MORE with that, or how THE GOVERNMENT COULD HELP WOMEN WITH THE WORK OF HAVING AND RAISING CHILDREN, as the governments so wisely do in every country of Europe. Incredibly, although these guys actually brought up “The Handmaid’s Tale”, they showed zero self-awareness of being part of a system like the one in the book, nor of defending patriarchal religious systems like that. They want to double down on entrenching themselves and their communities in a dead, poorly-written out-of-date 2000-year old book that justifies and codifies powerless roles for women. You know It’s not safe to raise children when you don’t have a job and a way out of a bad relationship. Domestic abuse and child abuse by autocratic men have shown us that - when a woman has small children and no way to leave, bad men can do what they want. So work is not just a way to make ends meet for women, it’s a way to ensure good treatment by your spouse. Equality in all job and family roles ensures that children and women will not be mistreated. Absolute power corrupts. We know this!! If you want happy families, fight for equality and justice for women. Make men help more. Make it easier for women to raise children. Pay women better. Make the work week shorter for everyone, as they did in France. Give women free in-home help and longer maternity leave, as they do all over Europe. Encourage men to be very involved fathers (which is not only honorable, but fun and meaningful). I didn’t hear you say anything about good ideas like that. Sounds like you just want to preach more hellfire and damnation, to scare people into the old Christian roles. A society that is unjust holds the seeds of its own destruction. Patriarchy is a stupid system that makes raising children harder. It’s bound to fail, if it doesn’t adapt and change to become more egalitarian. No wonder the women of Japan and Korea, where men help less and women’s roles in the family are much harder, are saying they just don’t want to do it any more. No wonder Christianity is on the way out, in the US. Try really hard, you three old obsolete guys, to put yourself in the shoes of a young Korean woman who knows that if she has children, she’ll have to have a full-time job plus work like a dog at home, or be considered “a bad wife.” Meanwhile men there have much more freedom and much less work at home, and are encouraged to work ridiculously long days at work and also socialize with their male workmates, while neglecting their wife & kids. Maybe you too would step aside from taking on the parenting job, as a woman in Korea. Especially because climate change is a scary reality for our children. Many women don’t want to bring children into a world that may end up in a collapse. And of course we caused that collapse by chasing the dollar and neglecting nature, in the same way men are neglecting women’s needs. There are none so blind as they who will not see.

    Cisterns with water
When you are sitting in on a conversation with Chris, Tom, and Glen, you are exposed to not only their experiences and knowledge but the good, bad, and the ugly from historical minds. These podcasts are deep reservoirs of wisdom.

    Awesome
This podcast is a world class philosophy and theology podcast for blue collar folks, to the glory of God.

Always thoughtful, often brilliant, great topics
I love the Pugcast! Each of these three hosts have their own style of speaking and sharing ideas, and they really compliment each other nicely in this way. The topic choices themselves are insightful and nuanced, and the atmosphere light and refreshing. Support them on Patreon!

    Much ado about much
Chris, Tom, and Glenn engage on the foundational issues of the Christian faith and worldview. Their insights and somewhat unique perspectives are almost always illuminating, thought-provoking, and informative for me. Woof-woof.

What I missed when my phone died
My phone’s logic board recently crashed, hurtling me back into Luddite bliss. I appreciated the enforced quietude, the necessity of being unplugged. The one thing I missed, though, was listening to this show. I now have a new phone and am once again bombarded by life, but being enriched by what the pugsters have to share makes it worth the travail.

    Excellent Reformed Content
Long form, not a bunch of sound bites; they don’t talk over each other; each host adds scholarly insight; topics are interesting and often deep; Christ is honored; like attending a seminary but sans any bad teachers; I never miss an episode.

    Love the Pugsters!
So I don’t lose track, I listen to their old episodes in order on the Fight Laugh Feast app, and their new ones on YouTube. I’ve learned so much from these brothers in the last year. This podcast, along w Knox Unplugged, has really highlighted my ignorance of the Christian riches of the medieval period, along w so many other gaps in my knowledge. And even though they dig far back into the treasure chest, they do a great job of tying it to today’s issues. The combination of a historian, plus a theologian/philosopher, and a blue collar pastor (also well versed in theology and philosophy) makes for a truly illuminating conversation each and every week!

    Wisdom for young men.
I just finished the episode in euthanasia. The thing I appreciated was the pastoral reminder that we as Christians ought to remember the tradition that we have surrounding death. It is not simply a biological process; it is a spiritual process and we must treat it as such. Thank you men, your wisdom is a gift from God and ought to be used for His kingdom; in this you are doing a great job. Jessy Smit

    Overflowing with Wisdom
I’m currently a student at a Classical and Christian college and these guys have helped me systematize all the ideas I am constantly trying to juggle towards a more robust Christian vision. They are full of wisdom and knowledge, always cogent, and just a joy to listen to. Very grateful for their podcast.

    Excellent conversations and topics
Love these guys! They talk and ramble and get places through thoughtful conversations and specific topics! Also, they write books! In The House of Tom Bombadil - C.R. Wiley is great. Still waiting on Tom’s book…Glen Sunshine has the best name and a magnificent beard! All great reasons to hang out with them and sharpen your mind.

    Corptaucracy’s whiners
In the US we have a long establish call Dr. Corptocracy. Everything you’re complaining about is simply impositions by the corporate owners on their subjects who signed up for it through various methods. The cradle to grave security that’s what most people signed up for and now that the owners of the plantation are changing a few rules all they can do is whine about it thinking that their corporate status is what God had them born into. It is ehat their parents or themselves signed up for and have been ratifying those decisions nearly every day since so stop whining and leave the corporation if you don’t like it. But know this, freedom isn’t attractive to most people because it requires a great amount of personal responsibility.

    A Gem of a Podcast
This is currently my favorite podcast! I have learned so much from these three gifted gentleman. They have incredible insight into philosophy, theology, history, and culture from a classical Christian perspective. There is a wealth of profound content to be found here on a variety of topics. I really appreciate these men and hope that they will continue to produce podcasts, books, and articles for years to come. This is truly a podcast gem. Keep up the good work Pugcast!

    Insightful
As a busy high school student, I don’t have time to listen to every episode, but I am always glad when I catch one. The episode “Sophistry Past and Present” inspired my senior thesis, which I just defended today. Several episodes since then have approached the same theme of language and reality from different angles. They motivated me to keep going with my thesis while keeping me humble about my own knowledge and eloquence. :) Every topic is worthwhile, every discussion is deeply rooted in the Great Conversation, and every episode I’ve heard encourages me to pursue truth and the Source of all truth. Thank you!

Christian Nihilism / no place of Grace or New Life among these Deathworks
To borrow from one of the hosts’ allies, the late Philip Rieff: this anti-culture podcast is a Deathwork.

I love the deep dive these guys take in every episode. Not for everyone but I highly recommend to those who love to philosophize about how the gospel has and does affect all of life, history ,and destiny.

    A rare find
Every episode is a thoughtful discussion of the ideas that have shaped our modern world. I appreciate that the content isn’t coming from a bunch of half-wit culture clones. These guys have wisdom in their thinking that has the stench of a 100 year wine cellar.

    Excellent!
These gentlemen are so far and away smarter than I’ll ever be and I’m grateful to “sit at their feet” and listen to their banter about ideas and the impact those ideas have on our world today. They are philosophers, historians, theologians, pastors and professors.

    Great podcast
I listen to a number of podcasts and Theology Pugcast has quickly risen to the top of the list for me. The conversations are on a variety of topics, always edifying, and, despite the length of each episode, very few words are wasted.

    Provoking
You can’t listen to an episode and not encounter something these guys say that won’t challenge an assumption you have. I’ve walked away from the episodes on this podcast with a greater hunger to swim deeper into the pool of these ideas to see their development over the years into what we’re seeing today in American culture. Thank you for being bold in sharing and I look forward to more episodes!
