webdemizenOMG So appreciative!Wow! You guys are absolutely fabulous! I so appreciate the thoughtful analyses and heartfelt musings on many of the fundamental issues of our times. I have learned so much and feel empowered to share with others. May we all find a way to create that world we want to live in - one that honors people and the planet and allows us to live a life of fulfillment!

JenuufaGreater than the sum of its episodesI've listened to each season several times. Each fills in gaps to the history of the land of my birth. Against the backdrop of previous series, the climate and capitalism episodes feel more urgent and robust. Kudos to the writers & editors!

Spex-34Started good…Initially I was captivated by the interesting exploration of capitalism’s early roots and how things evolved through time, but the scope gradually zoomed into a narrow minded anti-capitalist propaganda narrative.
-
Roro6262PhenomenalJust so well thought out and delivered. Scene on Radio has exposed me to so many great perspectives on things I feel I already was an expert in. I just wish there was more content, which would be difficult due to the thought and cars put into every episode and season.

Martha from SyracuseGreat podcastSuch good storytelling about really interesting topics: who are we, how did we get here, what works, what’s a better way…. my description is vague but the episodes are clear, balanced, and so good.

Amybamy86Seeing White seriesThis is probably my all time favorite podcast series and I was so excited to see a new season unpacking the history and current state of capitalism and it has not disappointed! Just a phenomenal series delving into some of the most important issues of our day. Even with such heavy topics it never leaves me feeling hopeless somehow; it’s thoughtful, heart centered, intelligent journalism. I’m excited to see what seasons come next, because this past one has been like Pandora’s box with so many segments that could be whole seasons in and of themselves.

Lulululu1959Well documented radioLike others, I came to Scene on Radio via the peerless Capitalism series, season seven. I am grateful for all the recommended books and little known facts about well-known historic figures. While I’m somewhat empathetic toward them, I cannot help attempting to dispute those who find the sources and scholarship unconvincing. We in the USA have all been steeped in the mythology of the Free Market for at least a century. I’m sad that these listeners have yet to recognize that we have been gaslit about Adam Smith’s Free Hand for generations, and all I can do is wish them luck as we wade into uncharted economic territory alone.

G NardieTeach a man some thingsTune in and get educated in a thoughtful way that challenges what people think of the structures of power in the world. Great for a long term vision of who we are, how we got here, and where we’re headed.

J FrauEngaging, smart, and timelyI started with Season 7 Capitalism, and I was absolutely hooked. This is one of the best podcasts out there, packed with information, but also so intelligently organized and thoughtfully delivered. I am listening for the second time all the way through. If you felt like something was missing in your formative education on all things related to the United States, you are absolutely correct. Let Scene on Radio fill in the gaps. These critiques are more relevant than ever, but knowledge is power. You need this knowledge.

NonetoopleasedddFluffGive this podcast a try if you’re depressed, unfulfilled, stuck in a dead end job with a terrible boss and just need someone to confirm the suspicion you have that it’s everyone else’s fault but your own.

valcivilian2017 podcasts still relevant in 2025!So smart. Love it.

Nikg736Amazing podcastThis is perhaps the best podcast I have ever listened to. Started with season 7 Capitalism and it blew me away. Rich with insights and information that you don’t typically get. Powerful reporting. Even the music and composition of the show itself is very well done and adds to the impact and experience. I’m now working my way through the other seasons and am equally impressed. So well done.
-
Chris AlthorPropagandaWas hoping for an academic deep dive into capitalism, instead I got a politically driven and skewed take. You all can do better.
-
JJ from PAGot Hooked: So awesome.I listened to the Capitalism series and got hooked that now I’ve started back through all seasons. So well done - love the very professional straightforward approach to educating the listeners from a different perspective. I seek reasons to be alone or work on a project around the house where I can put on headphones and sneak in an episode or 2 or 5!!!

JackautumnJackI recently came upon this show while walking in the CO foothills. I have learned so much and have been shocked by many of the atrocities of the white man. Thank you for putting together a thought provoking podcast.
-
makeupmynamePlease tone down the delivery.Very good series, but, as other reviews have indicated, the female co-host needs to shed some of her broadcast training/background. It’s a big distraction from the information at hand — which is more important than the personalities who present it.

Hadmar911Ali BBefore writing this I should say I believe all media are together to influence people the way they want this recent a lady the republicans way of hard work lead to ownership and democratic cities are to much into giving away things this is lie right wing garbage they both parties have problems and no clear solutions also for more than a hour no one mentioned white poverty although it’s the largest number of poor people I was disappointed I was starting to like the podcast but now I I know its the same message

The Real UrvUrmFirst class introduction to parts of history that may be “inconvenient” to someRecommend to anyone who seeks to understand how we got here

MSKSA911Scene in RadioPhenomenal series about American history. Looking to sharing with friends and family.

Beth BelongStunningAbsolutely breathtaking romp through history.
-
knocknameyThe NPR banter is the only negativeListening to Season 7 — excelllent, except for the chit/chat banter between the host and the co-host. Her obviously scripted and perky, painfully performative banter with the host adds no value and it often feels as if the co-host considers the audience kindergarteners who need to be talked down to as such. It’s distracting, insulting, and annoying.

William AnsleyA world out of balanceScene on Radio is a wonderful series that tries to explain why the world is in the mess it's in by considering inequalities. The seasons cover inequalities of (2-Seeing White) race , (3-Men) gender, and (7-Capitalism) wealth. Season 4 (The Land That Never Has Been Yet) explores how racial, gender, and economic inequality were part of the founding principles of the United States. Season 5 (The Repair) considers climate change as being due to some people's belief in the inferiority of nature and where that may have come from. Season 6 is outlier, it covers the specific history of the only successful coup in the US, part of the fraught racial strife after Reconstruction. This series focuses on the US and how it is affected by and has contributed to these problems. This podcast is often uncomfortable and depressing listening, but it does offer some hope.

CathyMenoEngaging and enlighteningIncredibile reporting. Every aspect is well thought out and very enlightening. This should be taught in high school.

Lillers:DEssential listening.Scene on Radio consistently produces some of the most educational podcasts available concerning history and development and current effects of political forces such as racism, sexism, and—in this series—capitalism. It’s really, really, excellently produced, actually fun to listen to. Which is not what one expects from such deep and important political history and philosophy.

photoguy1Adopting the worlds view…This country was founded on a free market. The problem isn't capitalism but monopolies and companies like the ones mentioned being allowed to lobby Congress and the taxes Congress continues to impose on the American people! All while giving themselves another raise! It's not the big-name businesses that are the problem, it's the continuous policy and bills that continue to wipe out the middle class and create further divide in our country!

jknox78251Incredible tectonic journalismJust love Scene on Radio and the long-form journalism they continue to excel at. This season is such an incredible addition to the world. Every person in the world who wants to make the world a better place needs to listen to this and understand the ancestry of capitalism.

LaffinLamI finally get it!First, I’m excited Scene On is back! It’s been too long and I look forward to future seasons. Second, this season on Capitalism blew me away. I always knew something wasn’t right about the American system of capitalism, but not having majored in economics…ran away screaming from it…I never understood how we got to where we are in the first place. In this season John and Ellen brake it down from the historical origins of system to what we see today and what needs to change for our future. Thank you thank you thank!

west seattleiteBrilliant season on capitalismI’m so grateful to John and Ellen for this season on capitalism! Great, thought-provoking history in an engaging audio storytelling package. I’m learning so much and got my 13-year-old hooked, too.
-
JeffEdmIncredibly insightfulSo powerful that the culminating topic from the previous 6 seasons focuses on capitalism. And says so much about what we prioritized in the formation of our country. Thanks so much.

fickes1080Unbiased?I love that this show is intriguing and spends a lot of time on history, especially the darker and little talked about parts of it. And I feel the show trying not to just talk about the negatives of capitalism, but their effort is a straw-man. I would love them to speak at length about the positives and the negatives. I love that they aren’t scared of upsetting a free-market audience (of which there are probably very few), but I wish they were also not afraid of upsetting their majority viewership of left-leaning folk. They may be asking hard questions if put toward at a Trump convention, but I would get a more authentic feel if they talked about both sides.

Sarahkate622Every season is as good as the lastNuanced, well researched and interesting looks at the structures that hold up our society.

HL BarrettFalling in and out of time, just to hide in life awhileAccidentally stumbled onto this podcast. I usually like series that tell a long arc of a story or are about politics or some other topic or more linear history. The early episodes of this show are more eclectic. Give it a try - you will find something of interest!

ablackfeministATLWish I Found It EarlierWonderful podcast. Wish I found it before now.

House of CharlitaJust listen and learnPut this on when you can pay attention and are open to having what you think you know challenged and expanded. Thank you to the team that creates every episode with care and intention and really great production. One of my favorite podcasts, and one of the podcasts that got me into loving podcasts!

Udfood_UACGripping and nuancedScene on radio creates shows that are gripping and nuanced. They attack big concepts such as race, gender, and capitalism and leave you with a better understanding than when you started. I would recommend this show to anyone who is willing to have their beliefs challenged, or more so exposed.

soup167167Best Podcast out ThereScene on radio will teach you what you need to know about America, and you will better under yourself and your place in this country as a result listening. Enjoy!

halbal666I love this podcastI had a couple episodes of this podcast assigned as homework for a college course, and I haven’t been able to stop listening. I started on the third season about patriarchy, then to Seeing White, and now I’m at the end of The Land that Never Has Been Yet. I love the reporting in these episodes. It’s brings to light many things I didn’t know, and even more things that I’d heard of, but didn’t have all the context to understand it. I’d recommend this podcast to anyone who wants to explore deep issues in our society with a splash of humor and even hope.

HattieCHThe Seeing White series on Scene on Radio podcastAs a blind senior with higher ed degrees in musics of other cultures, this series was and is a profound introduction to the white man-made lie of race. My own and others’ study in undoing racism was kindled or, in my case, rekindled by George Floyd’s murder. The episodes make glaringly clear and inescapable the need for me and for us to learn and face the racist structures built by our forefathers and sustained by most of us white folk even if we claim ignorance. This series built trust for me to continue learning of the U. S.’s horrifying continuous history of exploitation. As I read the history of Beavers in “Beaverland” by Leila Philips, I think Scene on Radio could braid this history into our savage greed to create the cancer of unlimited extorting work from humans and materials from animals and all other layers of life.

All The Good StuffBeautifulLoved this podcast for years. Last series about Wilmington Massacre was superb. Guests, stories, moderators, details & possible action to take was both inspiring & necessary. Love and knowledge will overcome.
-
queen ragamuffinSceneOn radioHonest history that poses way more questions than it answers! This podcast is brillant! Always engaging, informative, and bittersweet. It always addresses things that I have wondered about. Even when I think that I know something about the topic at hand, I always learn more!
-
JimRaleighScene on Radio is fantasticI have learned so much from listening to this podcast and am thrilled that it has found a new home at the Kenan Center for Ethics at Duke. I’ve listened to all the series and just found out how to leave a review The latest show, Echoes of a Coup is just as excellent as all the previous ones. It presents a view of the Wilmington Race Massacre in expansive context. I wish all the people still brainwashed by the “Lost Cause” narrative would listen to it.

mtnmliveregregiousthe US white supremacy is IS the basis of this country - it is terrorism to say the least so so SO sad and the loss of unnecessary lives yet to be fulfilled
-
essentiallymomScene on RadioInformative. Spoken with clarity and no unspoken, ignorant bias. Do you need education on your journey to anti-racism? I did. Yes, this brown girl, living in Alabama, from Maryland. Yes, I did. And - I am a little further down the road. Join me. Listen to this podcast.

Amblin42So glad to have the show backJust the first episode of this season has revealed history I didn’t know or knew incorrectly. Highly recommend.

VisiontraffickerTears of joy…I cried legitimate tears of joy when the new episode dropped today. I can’t really say how important this series is to shaping my understanding of the world. This series is quintessential to America understanding how to interpret our past and present to understand the best past forward, and up. If you haven’t listened to “Seeing White” or the season regarding democracy, queue them. Really, all of the seasons continue to be relevant and of great import.

MikeandhisMacAmazing Podcast - a must listen tooJohn works tirelessly to provide the highest quality and most comprehensive audio documentaries through the Scene on Radio platform. I feel that each episode is perfectly balanced in providing entertainment, thought provoking elements that inspire you to dig deeper, a perfect length per episode, logical and thoughtful presentation of information, and all done through the soothing and eloquent voice of John Biewen. AllinonepeaceMoving the Conversation ForwardAs a white woman and cleric of many years, praying for and working toward dismantling racism, I thought I was getting it and, in a way, I was but my daughter shared this show with me. A new lens dropped in! I saw those white colonial pilgrim candles on the Thanksgiving table in a new light after listening to this show! I’m not sure what I’ll do with the Priscilla and John Alden… but I am sure I’ll never see them the same way again. What a gift this podcast is as we keep moving forward to brighter, more just, and more peace-filled places.
