    Excellent but…
Love this show. I am about 7 episodes in and it’s very insightful fun and interesting. The only criticism I have is that I wish the interviews were “live” meaning the hosts would interview the experts in person, even just partially. I always feel like there would be more nuanced information if the guest speaker was to have a more traditional back and forth with the hosts. Other than that a great show! Keep up the good work.

    Love this podcast!
Interesting and fun twists on history. Hosts are pleasant, intelligent, and entertaining. Most of all there is no agenda, politics, controversy; just entertainment! I’m kinda tired of all the podcasts continually forcing their agendas, politics, and especially the plethora of self help podcast out there. Sometimes I just want to be entertained; I don’t always need a life lesson! Show idea: the old grocery store employee who had to put all the stickers with correct prices on every single item in the store. Before we had UPC! As a child I remember going to the store and always seeing “ the man with the sticker gun”. He would always laugh and put a $100 sticker on my forehead. But think of the implications of this job: if merchandise was marked incorrectly either the grocery store would lose money or the consumer would. The show could also touch on who invented UPC and how these codes changed shopping globally. Thanks for considering! Love the show!

I really enjoy this podcast, but sound is an issue.
I have enjoyed Matt Beat’s YouTube videos for a few years now, and I love Helen Hong, especially in Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found out they where doing a podcast together. The subjects are great. It’s nice to learn something new every week. The only issue I have is with the sound quality. More specific, how the volume can be lower than the advertisements. This can be a problem when I’m driving my commercial motor vehicle. Other than that, I recommend this podcast to anyone interested in past employment ideas, you can put on your resume.

    iHeart ruins it
The hosts are barely audible compared to the deafening ads, which is a shame for me, because I really like Helen Hong in particular. If iHeart really want to fulfill their responsibility to their (many) advertisers, shows need to be properly and professionally mixed. This wasn’t an engineering glitch. It was a bad executive decision. iHeart, if you publish podcasts, do it competently. You’ve already helped ruin terrestrial radio. Don’t wreck podcasts.

    Interesting content
Full disclosure, I’m only 5 episodes in as I wrote this review: Overall a good podcast for history nerds or people who like to learn things. They could work on their fine detail editing a bit to get rid of the clicks and blips when they have made an edit in the audio. And I’ll be nit picky here, I wish Hellen would do something different than her “What?!?!?!?” It gets old, especially as a fan of WWDTM. I do enjoy the podcast and will continue to listen.

    A fun listen each episode
I’ve really enjoyed listening to Helen and Matt discuss these jobs. It’s a fun listen about something you didn’t realize you wanted to know more about. I highly recommend giving it a listen. Can’t wait for more episodes!!!
  • Not happy with update.
    Lose Helen Hong
I don’t mind her as a guest on Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, as they keep her in check, but she’s awful on this podcast. I think she may be intelligent, but she acts like a complete dim bulb here and it’s annoying as h-ll. She’s not funny here at all nor does she bring any value to discussion.
  • VeggieEars
    I want to like it
Helen Hong’s voice is deeply annoying.
  • Lindseylc719
    Interesting
Fun/easy to listen to and I’m always learning new things. Love the banter between the two hosts.

    Great to listen to
I love the fun topics and the hosts make it a fun listen. All around enjoyed
  • MeanLeanGreenBean
    Great concept
I enjoy subjects like what they are aiming for, so I feel like this show has a lot of potential for the next season. So far this isn’t as well done as it should be, and PLEASE, have mercy on us and edit out all the times Helen screams the word “WHAT?!?!.” I can’t take it.

    Good “job” to Jobsolete
I really enjoy this podcast. It is great to listen to in the car, while working, or on walks around the neighborhood. The hosts are knowledgeable, funny, and have great chemistry. I look forward to Thursdays for sure to see what jobs they discuss. My family loves reminiscing on some of the topics and it sparks more conversation around the dinner table.
  • Benuathanasia
    Great...except for...
Helen REALLY isn’t funny. She derails the show in a very unpleasant way. Sorry. Update: Helen just gets worse. I can’t take it any longer and will be unsubscribing.

    Amazing
I love the work, keep it up, it’s extremely interesting and eye-opening!

    Needs more research
I think the topic is interesting but there isn’t enough material. They need to have done much more research and present more content for the length. Also, I think it would have been much better to focus on jobs ordinary people performed. Telephone switchboard operator is interesting. There are probably many people who had family members that did this work. Royal mistress doesn’t really fit as a job and it isn’t really obsolete either.
  • cguagliano
    Interesting and easy listening
Enjoy learning something new and that episodes are quick to listen to
  • Ffmom3
    Very disappointing
If you are going to talk about jobs that happened in our past, you CANNOT judge it by today’s standards. Shame on you. I just listen to the phone operator and Hellen goes off on the job requirements. You need to understand history and the culture of that time. You made a huge error. I will not be listening to this pod cast again

    3-Stars sincerely
I’ve never given a 3-star rating before, but this podcast is 3-star, for sure. The topics are hit or miss. Some are interesting, some are not, and one wasn’t even obsolete, it was just greatly diminished. Both hosts are ok. Fairly entertaining, often funny, good chemistry, etc. However, one of them has a somewhat annoying voice. Sorry. Anyway, 3-stars. Some good, some bad. Not my favorite, not terrible. Good luck.
  • Central Iowan
    Great concept. Needs work.
It’s a fun and interesting concept, but the host needs a little work. Audio levels are what is the worst though. Turn up the volume to hear, then get blasted by messages during the breaks. Terrible if you are wearing AirPods.

    Helen’s screeching is killing this
I want to like this podcast. I really do. The concept is interesting. But I swear, if I have to listen to Helen screech “WHAAAAAT?!” one more time, I’m going to reach through my phone and strangle her. She adds nothing to this podcast and frequently just comes across as dumb and uninformed.

this funny and teaches me about history everytime. I am always ready for the next episode.
  • Thelilbeat
One of the best podcasts on the interwebs!
Be sure to give this a listen, you will not be disappointed. Fascinating topics and is one of the best podcasts on the internet. Also, Mr. Beat is awesome!

Solid Premise, Low-Quality Delivery From Co-Host
The trailer for this podcast and it’s premise we’re fascinating, and it sounded entertaining. Helen Hong, leaves the audience with a cringe feeling, however. Her dialogue reduces the content that they (most likely) worked very hard to curate. The way she reacts to the facts and the ebb and flow of the show is reduce due to her delivery. I hope the show learns, grows, and develops from the reviews and from this infancy.
  • Gabor the Blind Guy
    Good, but needs work…
I think the concept of this podcast is very interesting, but I find the hosts very ignorant. I wish the hosts did a little more research on the topics they are covering instead of just “winging it“ or just going with what they know. They are spreading a lot of false information about topics… One example is that new movies were released on Tuesdays, not Fridays. A quick Google search on their part would go a long way to help the hosts speak more confidently about the topics they are trying to cover in each episode. I’m not trying to be rude, but I also find the female host very annoying and obnoxious. Her constantly screeching “WHAT!?“ and her all around dumb-downed persona makes what would be an informative podcast for adults more catered to preschoolers.

    Has potential!
I’m not on the side of the haters/ I like Helens voice! I’m excited to see where this goes/what jobs come up. Very cool concept .

Talking over the sound bites? Who does that?
When I heard a ad for this I shut off the podcast I was listening to and immediately went to find it thinking it sounded so fascinating. I was kinda shocked in the first episode when they played Helen talking over the operators voices with pointless and mindless chatter totally taking away from the purpose of the sound bite, annoying me to no end, but it only continued the rest of the episode. Not a single thing she said added any insight or value to the content and I as I listened waiting for the facts and cool info it suddenly ended and I realized that was it- a few blurbs from a professional and then just meaningless chatter from the hosts. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. So much potential here but this not what I hoped it would be.

    Gurl needs to chiiilllllll
Good... but the female host’s voice can be annoying at times. The high pitch overreacting stuff hurts my ears.
  • Smcknits
Love the idea, it hurts my ears
Great topics. And, I am sure Helen is lovely. Her voice is high pitched. When she fake laughs or pretends to be surprised... I feel like she’s dumbing down the content. If you are hoping your audience is grade school, you are probably fine, if you want adults to stay tuned... drop it down a notch or three.
  • gittensman
    Has potential but...
After hearing the ads for this podcast I immediately subscribed to this podcast with high expectations. I struggled through the first couple of episodes (and would have rated it 3/5 then) and pushed to make it to episode 5 hoping it would improve. The premise of the show is great and has massive potential but sadly it’s lacking facts, the hosts dilute it with off topic antics and in a 30 minute episode you’re lucky if 15 minutes of that is actual facts on the topic. I found it impossible to get through episodes towards the 4th and 5th ones. Which saddens me because there is massive potential in a show about jobs in bygone eras. I’d rather not attack the hosts and blame them for a poor podcast as I don’t believe in doing that but to start to reach the potential this show has would require some restructuring.
  • ajcj22
    Great topic
But why is she so annoying..... sorry.
  • Always needing a nickname
    My ears are bleeding.
The female host needs to tone it down greatly with the fake, exaggerated reactions. Couldn’t make it through the the first episode.
  • Danny Manners
    Really fascinating!
This is a really cool show, super interesting! They cover jobs that we’ve all heard of but never actually knew what they were. It’s a history lesson and both hosts are funny, laid-back and cool! Helen cracks me up!

    Entertaining Yet Educational
You learn a lot and don't even realize you're learning so much.
  • LadyLuck2626
    Good Concept,
This podcast has so much potential to be a strong 5 and a favorite in my opinion. It satisfies my constant desire for learning (the educator in me), provides a plethora of “nuggets” to share with friends to spark fun conversations, all in one. The background music is fantastic, and the guests are quite knowledgeable about their crafts. As I have shared the “glows,” I will encourage on “grow.” Helen exudes fabulous energy, and this is great for the show, but she is sometimes overly vivacious, so much that the “wows” and “Captain obvious” comments every fact are overbearing. Matt who is quite funny himself is submerged by her. This waters down the quality of the show, and exhausts the listener. There should be a balance in speaking and listening.
  • Podfabfun
    Very likeable!
The hosts have great chemistry! A fun listen!
  • CALI45618
    There’s promise here....
... but the current format doesn’t work. They have an expert on every show, which I appreciate, but the show is centered more on the hosts bantering in between the expert explanation. Matt seems to rely a lot on the expert rather than supplementing with additional information. And the way it’s currently structured , Helen is hearing about all of this for the first time, and a lot of it is her reaction, which is quite frankly annoying in spots. If you want really surface level understanding of these jobs, this podcast is for you. But I was left wondering more about the context in which the jobs emerged, how they declined, etc. It’s no Stuff You Missed In History Class, that’s for sure.

History Fan But Not For Me?
I like the premise of this show but the execution needs some work. More facts and details from both hosts about the subject would be appreciated. As well as some light humor. A lot of giggling but not a lot of jokes. I am hoping that they work out the kinks, It has the potential to be a really great show. Going to give it a few more episodes before I unsubscribe.
  • International Agent Guzma
It’s ok now, I think they will be better in the future.
Quite a bit of chatter, but good subjects and cool personalities. When they iron out the kinks, I think they have a 5 star podcast!
  • Beantown6
    Hilarious
Loved this concept and especially Helen. She’s amazeballs. Now where can I find me a seltzer man?
  • AustinYoozcheck
    A confusing show
The ads I heard on other programs made this show sound very appealing. However, once I listened my mind was immediately changed. The hosts seem to have done only preliminary research and often give opinions where facts are available. The production quality is top notch due to their distributor but this show leaves much to be desired.

    Love it
A delightful podcast to listen to while I sweep the chimneys of my customers.

    Fun show!
I’m loving this fun podcast! The hosts do a great job of giving the history juxtaposed with modern life. This is a must-listen for history buffs.
  • Maddog Wine
    Thumbs Down
I am a history buff and I thought this would be an interesting way to expand my knowledge. I was sooooo wrong. After three episodes I Unsubscribed. I found it disturbing when they are doing small talk voice overs when they had a subject matter expert talking. A good example is when they were playing a recording of switchboard operators trying to connect a long distance call from Los Angeles to Idaho. It would have been more interesting to hear how the operators made those connections. Because of Helen’s constant chatter I have no idea how many operators were involved or what was being said. Helen, you can learn a lot by more listening and less talking. All of the chatter is neither informative or value added.
  • BurnSamsung
    Fan of YouTube. Not this.
Sorry mr Beat. But this is really terrible. Mindless rambling. 2 people about to hit middle age rambling and making small talk about a very uninteresting topic. You are clearly stretching yourself too thin. You content is showing it.
  • Kittieflyn
    Pod tastic!!
This is such a fun podcast! I love history and trivia and this combines both of those. Helen and Matt do a wonderful job. I immediately binged the first 3 episodes. Highly recommend!!
  • Ornament
I would like to like it
Couple of problems. There's a lot of chatter where opinions are floated as possible fact. It is very difficult to tell if there is an expert in the subject? The format seems to be that one of the two hosts did research? But the other host hasn't but wants to act like they have. It's a mix of "I don't understand a basic topic", but insists on opinions being fact... What is that? Is it supposed to be funny? You can say "let's talk about <topic>". Stop repeating verbatim what someone else said. I heard the other person the first time, you don't need to be a parrot. Your sound tech is great. The first episode is a mess. Cutting in the conversation with the expert with after comments is terrible. And a lot of the history of soda is ignored, that would make the topic more interesting. Like "delivered early because the SUN WASN'T UP SO IT WAS COLD", which is why milk is delivered early, like, come on.
