The Untold Story: Criminal Injustice

508

On seasons 1 and 2, we took a deep look into policing and criminal justice in America. This season on The Untold Story, we go even further, with three investigations of injustice happening in your own backyard. From executive producer Jay Ellis and Lemonada Media, this season covers how we can fix the humanitarian crisis happening at Rikers Island; why your tax dollars are funding software that leads to over policing in our most vulnerable communities; and the racist roots of the debunked medical term excited delirium. Host Travon Free talks to real people who have experienced the effects first-hand, as well as lawyers, organizers, and city officials who are all part of the effort to answer the question: How can we hold our most powerful institutions accountable?

    Disinformation
Cops kill far less black people than white. Black civilians kill many times more of their people than police ever have.

How’s all that “activism” working out for Austin?
Praises cities and the activists who have driven dramatic police reform. Yet the results have been overwhelming bad for everyone especially black communities. Of course they don’t report on that in this podcast.

    Great show

I can’t stop talking about Police Unions!
If you’re confused why police are allowed to keep their jobs even after clear, unambiguous murder caught on tape; this will not only answer that, but tell you what you can do it about it. I truly believe the contents of this podcast contain the answer to desperately needed police reform.
  • gfgfhjjgfcvh
    Factual.
Negative reviews are either incoherent or angry at the content of the podcast. The production is high quality, the guests are experts in their fields, and the conversations are ALL fact-based and research-centric. I’m learning a ton of indisputable information about the topic. I would say this podcast is 95% facts on police unions and accountability and 5% dramatic/emotional individual stories of persons who’ve suffered/died from police negligence. Also, I’m a liberal snowflake. I know for a fact that if you are a Blue Lives Matter person this show will trigger you as much, if not more, than those of us who want to see police reform. And yet, facts are facts. You’ve been warned.

Info we all need as citizens!
I truly appreciate this podcast’s ability to breakdown police unions and the manner in which the episodes were organized to not OVERWHELM the listener is much appreciated. Jay takes a very serious issue and brings light moments—which again, I really appreciated. I am most thankful to the resource of nixthe6.org and campaign zero which has become my roadmap of action. Thank You!!!! I hope there will be more episodes in the future.

    Eye opening
This podcast was very informative. Protesting and raising awareness is a great first step in reform but action is needed to make meaningful lasting change. Holding police accountable should be one of the top priorities in the next steps. Dereck Chauvin had numerous complaints on his record before killing George Floyd. This podcast showed me how an officer can manage to continue to patrol the streets with this kind of record. It’s scary to think how often this could be happening.

    Must listen
We need more podcasts that examine why law enforcement acts with impunity especially in their encounters with minorities. I hear these stories of primarily black men and women being abused and mistreated and am outraged and want to understand the structures in place that prevents the rapid progression and change that need to take place in law enforcement. I think this podcast does a great job examining why it has been hard for change to occur and what’s taking place now to put change into motion in the law enforcement system.

    Policing America
Thank you so much Jay for this informal Podcast! I learned so much. I’m going to listen to it again and write down the 6 things that need to be changed in our police department and work to get them changed. I have 2 African American sons that should not be afraid of the police.

If black lives matter, do these steps
If black lives matter the police need to loose their grip on power which increase the budgets? Over time? And they get chunks of homeland security budgets, and sone, military budgets. How? They trade union endorsements for money, and deeper protections. Why does that matter? Politicians cannot get elected without those endorsements. And even in races where endorsement do t matter, they’re purchased I. Blocks. If you need a Democrat ejected one Los Angeles, you may have to deal with endirsemts and promised elsewhere. If a party needs to win an area, the the police unions get politicians I. The districts that need either bigger budgets, and:or protections. This is why politicians and stop short of forcing police to do anything. They csnt? Only party leaders can. What to do? Investigate, publish report, names names, indict politicians. Otherwise a state or federal end to endorsement by police must be nationwide and have the legislation that keeps it in unlawful. There are shows out there called, the stuff you should know. But the real stuff we don’t know, we can’t know. If black lives matter and you waste time talking about the content, the woe, you’ll only get sympathy and no difference made. This is the only thing worth working on period. Kamala never fails lowed her heart, often needing to file death penalty charges when it was against her heart. Now that she will have power, ask her. IS NOW THE NOW? because she have in until she was powerful rnough. So ask, Kamala, is now the now? There is no point unless the matter matters yet and if the now is now. Until the., follow endorsement, check the politicians calendar for meetings. Getting notes from those meetings and track it against what unions demand and win during negotiations. If black lives matter, this path is your road map. Do not deviate, no matter how salacious a story is, content uses your cache and you’ll need it fir the change. Now could be the now. Get guests on your show who begin to champion the idea about endorsement. Get articles written that tell readers for the first time that endorsement are paid for, nor are they a reflection of which politician is stronger in crime. It’s lobbying for money and benefits in exchange to appear strong on crime which is necessary to get elected. Thanks

    So glad I listened
Listened to all four episodes in one sitting. The host, Jay, and the great production made it easy to wrap my head around the policy that has shaped policing and shielded police departments from transparency and reform. Major props to everyone involved.

    LEO/community status: It’s complicated
Great dive into policing history, how we got to where we are, why we need to talk about it and the need to acknowledge implicit bias and racism. The system is broken and completely erases any of the work of the “good cops”. We need to fix it.
  • ComeOut2Nite
    Smart and much needed
Anyone who thinks thinks there isn’t a problem with policing in America should listen to this podcast. Smart, well made and genuinely interesting, I’m so glad I came across this pod.

    I’m here for it!
Thanks for making this, Jay. I’m very much looking forward to these crucial discussions. And I hope you and your sponsors ignore the haters criticizing your podcast for not being something else, namely propaganda for the police. We’ve had more than enough of that already for quite some time.

I want the real untold story
From real officers on what it’s like to be an officer in today’s world. To be caught in the middle of all this and just trying to do a job that consistently is putting your life in danger, and the nation hating you for something someone else did. It’s so easy for people to be critics because they have no idea what it’s like to work in the law enforcement profession. They don’t make the rules but they are supposed to enforce them, and be the one everybody hates. They don’t make the sentences. They are dealing with being unpaid, over worked, criticized, and so much more. They don’t make the unions, they just join them for protection, it’s the only thing that protects them, that is on their side. I want to hear the the typical officers story. Why do they do what they do, what is it like to walk into danger every day, what to you see that the rest of don’t in our cities, let’s hear from them. This host guy doesn’t know the untold story
